31st Annual Parent Involvement Conference February 3, 2016 in Robstown, Tx.
Hosted by the Education Service Center Region 2 and the Robstown Independent School District, the conference this year saw a record turnout of parents and educators from 28 area school districts, said Cindy Ferdin with the service center. This year's attendance was more than triple the attendance at the first event.
Clad in Mardi Gras-themed props and attire, attendees filled the Richard M. Borchard Regional Fairground in Robstown and heard speakers address topics relevant to a parent's role in enabling their child's success. The group learned basics of embracing their children's talents to seek scholarships, instilling respect at a young age, planning for life after high school and changes at schools prompted by a new state law regarding attendance requirements.
The theme of this year's conference was "Unmasking Barriers= Student Success"
which fit perfectly for an all out Mardi Gras celebration! Alice ISD took a large delegation of parents to participate in the day's events.

WAMS Career Fair
Students were escorted to the gym and were allowed to visit the various booths for 45 minutes. Thirty-five (35) different agencies/businesses/colleges were at hand to share information with the W.A.M.S. students. The agencies present came from areas such as: Alice, Corpus Christi, Beeville and Kingsville. As students visited with the various agencies and booths they picked up important information as well as neat trinkets and gifts.
In addition to community and college representatives, Alice High School clubs and programs were also on hand to offer students a look into what high school has to offer them. High school students currently enrolled in the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Classes spoke to students about what they love about their program and/or club and were able to explain all that is offered at Alice High School. The high school students are able to offer plenty of inside information and are able to start getting 7th and 8th graders thinking about their career paths. AHS clubs and organizations that were present included: Health and Science, Jr. Police Academy, DECA,FFA, AFJROTC, ECHS(Early College High School) and Cosmetology. .
Alice ISD Presents at MASBA Conference
The presentation by Alice ISD was entitled: "Oh, The Places You'll Go! A Success Story on Parent and Community Engagement." The focus of the session was to highlight the successes that Alice ISD has experienced over the last four years in improving parental involvement. The presentation focused on three key points: Annual Parent Conference, the online curriculum and parent newsletters that are published throughout the year, and the thorough process of the HB 5 Community and Student Engagement Evaluation that is conducted annually and reported to TEA. Through district and campus initiatives Alice ISD is steadily beginning to see a positive shift in how schools, parents and community members are working cohesively to improve the education of Alice ISD students.
Research shows that Hispanic students with parents who are involved in their education are more likely to earn higher grades, have higher rates of attendance, and are less likely to drop out of school. Improving the likelihood that students will have a successful school career is not only the responsibility of teachers and school administrators, but also a shared responsibility between schools, parents, family and community stakeholders.
More about MASBA
Each year in January, MASBA designs a very unique, targeted conference which offers Texas school board members the opportunity to understand the challenges that public educators face each year and it also assists school districts as they work to promote the advancement and relevance of the Mexican-American culture in public education as it impacts our local school operations.
This year's Annual Conference and Exposition theme was: "Preparing the Future Leaders of Tomorrow, Today!" The curriculum of the conference was meant to educate, train and provide board members with the information and resources necessary to better understand, prepare and equip school districts to make a successful move into the 21st Century in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics.
M.A.S.B.A began over 40 years ago and their mission has always been focused on:
1. Making high quality education possible to ALL students
2. Increasing parental and community participation in public governance
3. Improving academic achievement
4. Advocating for equitable school finance

Why do you stay involved and /or volunteer?
I feel it is important that I stay involved and volunteer in my child's school so I can stay connected with her on an educational level. I get to see what is going on in school and see what she faces on a daily basis. I also feel staying involved is a good way to show my child how I love and respect the school and staff which is exactly how I expect her to feel towards them. .
What great things have you been involved in at this campus?
One great project I was involved in was helping with the "Tree of Hope". Back in October we put out a paper tree and sold ribbons for $1 for kids to purchase. They got to put their name on tree and hang from tree where it stayed all month long. All proceeds went to a former Hillcrest teacher who is currently battling cancer.
What special events/activities/services leading to the nomination.
Mrs. Rodriguez has helped with fundraisers, served as a field trip chaperon, assisted with classroom parties, helped with luncheons, "Tree of Hope", helped at the Donuts with Grandparents day, and she frequently helps out in the parent room.
