LET'S CELEBRATE
- To celebrate Mardi Gras/Carnaval, 6th grade French and Spanish students learned about the historical reasons for the celebration, as well as vocabulary related to the festival. They gave parades in school, wearing the masks they had made. Making crepes together was a tasty treat. In Spanish class, several masks won prizes. The prize winners are: "Elena" Haire, "Maria" Taylor, "Paco" Jacobs, and "Sierra" Manning. iFelicitaciones!
Congratulations to the following students who competed in the regional Math counts competition held on Saturday, February 18th at UVM: 8th graders Ella Haire, Lulu Louchheim, Elyse Martin-Smith and 6th grader Hadley Stockwell. A special congratulations to Lulu Louchheim who will advance to the state competition to be held on March 25th at Vermont Technical College. Congratulations Mathletes!

A MESSAGE FROM THE PTO
Thank you to everyone who submitted box tops for this year's team competition. It was a close one. After tallying numbers from both deadlines, Mrs. Thayer and Mrs. Jesset's Architects finished first with only 104 Box Tops separating them and the second place team of Mrs. Filardi and Ms. Lubic's Voyagers. More than 5,200 Box Tops were submitted this year, which translates to more than $520 for our school. Thank you everyone!
MONTSHIRE MUSEUM SCIENCE WORKSHOPS
This week CCS Middle Schoolers took part in student workshops run by Montshire Museum of Science, provided for by the CCS PTO.
Our 7th and 8th graders Investigated Earth's Energy Balance
Using handheld computers and other digital tools, students measured the temperature and the “reflectivity” of different colored materials. Students plotted the data, reached conclusions about how materials respond to solar radiation, and discussed the implications for earth’s polar regions and the earth as a whole. This knowledge translates to an understanding of how earth reflects and absorbs energy from the sun and is crucial to understanding climate and how it is changing.
Our 5th graders explored Hot Air Balloons and the concept that hot air is lighter than air.
Students worked in small groups building their own hot air balloons. The scientific concepts of density, heat, and other properties of air were revealed as students flew their balloons in the Museum's main hall.
Our 6th graders explored River Formation
Students used stream tables to investigate how the force of water moves sediment, shapes rivers, and forms deltas. They also viewed satellite imagery of New England streams and rivers for a different perspective.
Thank you to everyone who donated to the PTO this year, so that programs like this could be possible.
EMPOWER YOUTH LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE AT CCS!
Our 2nd annual Empower Youth Leadership Conference will be held at CCS for students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade on Saturday April 8th from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The conference will focus on helping participants grow their personal leadership skills. Middle school youth will participate in fun, interactive workshops where they will learn success strategies, tips for stronger minds and bodies, how to create a vision for their future, and how to communicate more effectively with parents and peers. We will discuss world issues and culture with teens in Uganda through a live Skype conversation!
Lunch, snacks, and drinks are all included. Transportation can be arranged if needed. There is a suggested donation of $27. which is appreciated to help cover costs, but is not required. To register, fill out the registration form and return it to Mrs. Muroski, or Ms. Batty at CCS by March 17th. This will help us with planning and space is limited. Once we receive your registration we will email you with all the details for the day. If you have any questions you can email Mary Muroski at mmuroski@cssu.org or Kathy Batty at kbatty@cssu.org. This event is co-sponsored by the Children’s Legacy Partnership, a nonprofit organization in VT helping to better the lives of children worldwide through education.
