Our Highlights: What We've Been Rockin' At!
This week was a busy week!
We were surgeons! Yes, you read it right...surgeons! We performed surgery on words this week! We learned all about what surgeons do and how smart they are. We also learned about contractions and why they exist. We then performed surgery on words to make contractions in order to say the words quicker and easier. We used our scalpels (scissors) to cut out the letters that were no longer needed, then stitched the words back together (glued), and then we needed to show the scar (the apostrophe) of where the letters came out. They even filled out their own contraction surgery book showing their work. If you missed the video at the top...make sure to click on it to see the surgeons in action!
In math, we have continued to work on regrouping and connecting the showing with the doing. Knowing why we carry the tens is just as important as the how we regroup. We learned the trick..."If it is 10 or more, carry the tens next door. If it is 9 or less, let it rest!" Have your child explain to you why they carry the tens next door using academic mathematical language!
In reading we compared and contrasted the story of Cinderella with the story The Rough-Face Girl. We took a close look at the similarities (comparisons) and an ever closer look at the differences (contrasts). The students and I really challenged each other to think deeply about the difference between the two stories and why those differences were important to the story and the people that would have retold that story. See our Venn Diagram chart below to see what they came up with!
Next week, we will be traveling the world to hear other Cinderella-style stories with a focus on understanding point of view and continuing to work on our comparing and contrasting skills. Check out our stories and travels HERE!
