Why Community Philanthropy Matters
Community Foundation for Loudoun Northern Fauquier Counties
It All Starts with Your Neighbor
Did you know that our area has some of the most lackluster charitable giving rates when compared to the rest of America?
Dubbed one the richest in the U.S.—our average household donates 1.98% of discretionary income to charity. That’s 1% less than the average American donating 3% to charity. Put another way, that reduced percentage is equivalent to about $151 million in charitable gifts, never made.
Help us change that: Your tax-deductible gift of $60, $120, $200 or more, fuels our work to reduce this shortfall in our backyard as we raise awareness about local need and the people who deserve our help. And, your gift will be matched, dollar for dollar by one of generous donors.
Our plan is to launch a very local community awareness campaign in March 2017. It will be about real live folks here at home who have a story to tell. Because our goal is making our community known as one of the wealthiest, happiest, and most generous.
Neighbors. Stories. Hope. Your generous gift supports this important initiative for our community, and will be matched. We’ll use every tool in our toolbox to build more awareness, catalyze volunteerism, and spark increased charitable giving, especially using social media. I hope you’ll take a moment, if you haven’t already, to “like” our Facebook page or follow us on Twitter. We have a whole lot more than just chatter to offer up.
My 25 years as a nonprofit executive has fined tuned a final thought worth sharing. People don’t give to a nonprofit organization. They give through it. This is particularly true of community foundations. It’s given me a deep, abiding appreciation for donors—philanthropists like you—who re-invest their wealth to make their community and their world a better place. Thank you for your generosity.
Sincerely,
Amy Owen
Your support helps us continue our existing Leadership programs in our community, too:
- offering executive coaching and leadership development for our local nonprofits
- teaching high-school students to be grantmakers, through Forward Turn
- coordinating a 24-hour day of local giving, Give Choose, coming up on May 2, 2017
- designing quarterly workshops through the Nonprofit Academy, and,
- serving as donor-advised grantmakers in our community.
