We are learning about....

Reading

We are finishing up our Fairy Tale unit this week. We have read so many different versions of many classic fairy tales. We will be making a Fairy Tale book of all the work that they have been doing. Look for it to be going home at the end of the week.

Writing

Our grammar unit is in full swing. Each day we watch a different short video introducing the topic we will be learning about. So far we have learned about nouns, common nouns, proper nouns, and reflexive pronouns. We will learn about collective nouns during our Science unit on life cycles of animals. See if your child can tell you what reflexive pronouns always end in (self or selves) and also some examples of common (teacher, store, holiday, month) and proper (Ms.Johnson, Lillian Schumacher, Labor Day, Target) nouns.

Math

We are still doing WONDERFUL in math. Place value and learning different ways to write 3 digit numbers is easy peasy lemon squeezy to us! :)

CHANGE!!!!!! Our Unit 2 Test will now be next Tuesday on September 30. I will send home a review the day before. Please help your child review the material before their test the next day. Thanks :)

Social Studies

This weeks Scholastic News article was about the Main Idea of the story. We talked about the author Cynthia Rylant and her good work habits and what we could learn from her about changing our own work habits.

Your child may access the Scholastic News website at home and play games, read, watch videos, and more. When you get to the website there is a blue box that says Student Login in the top right corner. Click on that and put our classroom password in. Our password it Ls2ndgrade.

Here is the link to the website:

Science

We observed our colony of ants and wrote about what we saw them doing. Sugar water makes them very active :)

EXCITING NEWS! Our caterpillars have completely formed their chrysalis'. We moved them to their new habitat and in 7-10 days we should have some Painted Lady Butterflies.

Next week our class will get the chance to rotate between the 2nd grade teachers classrooms to learn about the life cycles of different animals. (we moved this a week later to fit other stuff in)

Homework

Just a reminder...

Your child will have Spelling words that will come home every Monday and we will have a test each Friday. Please practice the words at home every night.

There will also be a Fluency Passage that will go home on Monday's and is due on Fridays. Please read the passage with your child every night and mark how many words they read in a minute and any mistakes they made. Most Friday's I will read the passage with them again at school to see their progress.

Finally, your child has a monthly reading log in their Shark Binder. If your child reads 10 minutes a night they will reach 300 minutes by the end of the month. When your child brings it back at the end of the month, they will receive a surprise from me. :)

Thank you for all you do at home to help your kiddo succeed at school! :)
