Dolphin Tales
A Newsletter for Dove Elementary Families
January 15-19, 2018
A Note from the principal...
The first week of 2018 at Dove Elementary was nothing short of AMAZING! We started the spring semester off with a BANG as two of our grade levels kicked off IB units this week! Our Dove Dynamic Drummers rocked the house during the GHS boys' basketball game halftime on Tuesday evening. Also this week, our Campus Excellence Committee began a plan for the next steps our campus will take in our work with student voice. We ended our week with an Atten-Dance celebrating the 2nd nine weeks perfect attendance of 96 of our Dove Dolphins. We look forward to seeing you at our talent show on Friday night beginning at 6pm! As we look around the building- from our enrichment classes to our Kinder classes- it is evident that the teachers and staff at Dove are committed to doing what's best for our students. It's a great day to be a Dove Dolphin! Be sure to follow our story on Twitter using the hashtag #DESisBEST.
Proud to be your principal,

Proud to be IB!
We are off to a fabulous start in 2018 at Dove! Third grade is finishing up their IB unit on How We Express Ourselves. Students have been learning about the ways people discover and express ideas about culture, beliefs and values. This week students participated in a “Culture Cafe” where they met in teams across the grade level to share research and get feedback on upcoming presentations and final products. Not only have these students shown they can research, organize and present ideas they’ve shown they can apply being reflective and effective communicators.
Perfect Attendance ROCKS!!
In addition to celebrating those students with perfect attendance the entire fall semester, we also celebrated students with perfect attendance during the 2nd nine weeks of school during our Atten-Dance on Friday afternoon! To be invited to the Atten-Dance, these students were at school every day during the 2nd nine weeks; they were on time and did not leave early.
We will have another Atten-Dance at the end of the 3rd nine weeks in March!
7th Annual World Friendship Day
Hello Dove Parents and Guardians,
Our 7th Annual World Friendship Day at Dove is February 9th, 2018, and we need your help setting up the day before the event and/or help during the event. If you have a few hours to spare on either day, please use the Sign Up Genius link below.
Also, we would really love to reserve a table for you on Friendship Day if you would be willing to showcase your heritage/culture or teach us about a country you’ve lived in! For that, you will be needed from 7:50-2:00 with frequent breaks and an hour for lunch. You can use the Presenter slot of the form to sign up. Please indicate what country you will represent.
Let me know if you have any questions. Thank you so much!

Dove's Got Talent!
It's time, again! The talent show is such a fun night for kids and parents! We can't do it without our WONDERFUL volunteers!
Talent Show Rehearsals are on Tuesday, January 16th from 6-8pm* (or until it's finished). *In case of inclement weather on Tuesday, rehearsals will be rescheduled for Thursday, January 18th from 6-8pm*.
Please, if you have time to spare, and/or if your child is participating in the talent show anyway ,sign up for a 30 minute time slot. The rehearsal will go as quick as possible. We will need help checking people in, maybe a little crowd control, and collecting questionnaires. We also like to have a parent or two back stage to help with props and microphones, and curtains. PRETTY EASY!
Talent SHOW NIGHT volunteers will mainly be back stage. We need a few parents back stage (preferably the same parents from rehearsal, so they know the run-down). Also we like to have a parent at each cafeteria door to help point people in the right direction and to cut down on noise from door slamming during acts as the show will be professionally recorded. We will need someone in the 4th grade hall to check in acts. Also we would like to have volunteers at the concession stand. Please lend 30 minutes of your time, if you can!

Thank you in advance to all of our Volunteers!

Digital Citizenship Week
GCISD is celebrating Digital Citizenship Week January 9-19. In GCISD, digital citizenship is embedded in the curriculum and revisited any time a class is using technology. In addition, there are two times during the year that we have a district-wide focus on digital citizenship: Back-to-School and in January after returning from the holiday break. We teach digital literacy utilizing Common Sense Education’s K-12 digital citizenship curriculum. Visit https://www.commonsense.org/ for more information about the curriculum and to access Common Sense Media’s parent resources.

Play it Safe
GCISD offers the "Play It Safe" program for all students in grades K-5. The GCISD School Health Advisory Council (SHAC is a volunteer council comprised of parents and community members that reflect the values of the district and community) has previewed and recommended these programs for all GCISD elementary schools. The curriculum and presentations are aligned with district philosophy. This program is a personal safety program and does not address human sexuality. Play It Safe is a child abuse prevention and awareness program that incorporates individual grade level, age-appropriate scripts and movies to teach children how to reduce the risk of sexual and physical abuse, and sexual assault. It teaches them to recognize potentially abusive behavior, provides the tools to respond to threatening situations, and encourages them to report abuse to a trusted adult.
Parents have the option to request that their student not participate in the above program(s). The form for non-participation is located on the GCISD website:
http://www.gcisd-kl2.org, Departments, Health and Physical Education, Nonparticipation forms.
A parent preview of the program will be held on Tuesday, January 16th, at 10:00 am or 6:00 pm at the GCISD Administration Building - Board Room, 3051 Ira E. Woods Ave., Grapevine, Texas 76051
If you are unable to attend the parent preview, but wish to view the material, please contact The Women's Center of Tarrant County, Inc. at 817-927-4040 and ask for the Play It Safe department. They will schedule a time for you to go to their center and view the videos.
