WHPE February Update
A Focus on Health
We are Wisconsin Health and Physical Education. Many times we end up focusing a lot of our efforts on physical education. Physical education has been under attack for so long and since most of our members primarily teach physical education, it is understandable why we have a tendency to focus on physical education. What we even sometimes forget is that health education is the other half of what we do. If we do physical education without health education, our students are missing out.
How many health decisions did you make today? Did you get eight hours sleep? Have breakfast? Have a healthy breakfast? Drink water today? Wear your seat belt? Have a piece of fruit instead of a candy bar? I believe that health education is just as important as teaching reading and writing. it is a skill we use every day of our lives, for our entire lives. We need to push to have quality health education just as much as we push to have physical education.
With that in mind. This month's update will focus on health education. First up, check out our "Relevant Issues for Health Educators" workshop next month. Mary Wentland, the WHPE 2012 Health Educator of the Year has taken the lead on creating an incredible line up for the March 11th workshop. Please check it out and come and learn with us!
Have a great heart health month everyone!
Sincerely,
Brett Fuller
WHPE President

SHAPE America Podcast and Webinar on Health Education
Not only are we focusing on health education in February, so is SHAPE America. Check out this podcast hosted by our very own Matt Pomeroy and Colin Brooks. Their panelists this month are Andy Horne, Andy Milne and Jeff Barlett. Many of you will remember Andy Horne (SHAPE America 2015 Health TOY) and Andy Milne from their phenomenal presentations at our convention last fall!
Why Teach Health?
One of the great partners in our fight to create quality health education is the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. Children's Hospital has created several e-Learning courses for elementary health education. These courses are free to school districts across the state.
The video below was created to explain why it is important to teach health at all grades!

Suicide Prevention
Under State Statute students must be taught suicide prevention. The Wisconsin Department of Public instruction has created some free resources for health teachers on suicide prevention. Check these out and if you have any questions, contat Eileen Hare at the DPI:
