We are so happy to be back at school as we missed our Pirates over the break. The next few months will be busy with new learning adventures, PTO events, and continuing to build relationships.

Next week, Tuesday 1/10, Wednesday 1/11, and Thursday 1/12, we will have early dismissal at 1:25pm for Parent/Teacher conferences. We are excited to discuss your child’s progress! The Parent Portal will be open on Friday, 1/13, for any parents who may need to view their child’s report card on-line.

School is closed on Monday, 1/16, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday.

*Please note, if your child receives Free/Reduced cost lunch, your child is also eligible to receive the same for breakfast at NDE. Breakfast is served in the cafeteria upon arrival of buses.

January is ‘Career Month’ at NDE. On Tuesday, an invitation to speak to your child’s class went home with information and scheduling details. Please speak to your child’s teacher at conference time if you have additional questions. We hope to see you in!

Our next One School, One Book event will kick off on January 17, 2023. We will be reading, Adventure According to Humphrey, by Betty G. Birney. Be sure to join the Main Office, Google Classroom for the link to our nightly read aloud sessions, video recordings of students reading the book, and other important information. The code to join is b2v7qgy. Also be on the look-out for information regarding the PTO’s Read-A-Thon fundraiser that will be held in conjunction with our One School, One Book reading!

Estamos muy felices de estar de regreso en la escuela ya que extrañamos a nuestros Piratas durante las vacaciones. Los próximos meses estarán ocupados con nuevas aventuras de aprendizaje, eventos de PTO y la continuación de la construcción de relaciones.

La próxima semana, martes 10/01, miércoles 11/01 y jueves 12/01, tendremos salida temprana a la 1:25 p. m. para conferencias de padres y maestros. ¡Estamos emocionados de hablar sobre el progreso de su hijo! Mr. Mackey’s instrumental music students are all set to begin group band practice on Friday, January 6. This activity will be in addition to the weekly instrumental music lessons and will take place during the final period of the day (2:50-3:25) in the cafeteria. Permission slips are found in Mr. Mackey’s Google classroom under the Assignments tab. We will be preparing for a concert in the Spring. Let’s have some fun!

Ms. Lewandowski’s second graders have been hard at work learning about many Greek gods and goddesses in reading. We are learning about reading and writing three digit numbers in math and are working on writing numbers in standard form, expanded form, word form and using base ten blocks. We enjoyed learning about different holidays celebrated all over the world right before winter break. We are so excited for the new year and to see what 2023 has in store in the future.

Mrs. D’Ulisse’s first graders went back in time, and studied what it was like to be a person in the ancient Middle East, specifically Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt. The students wrote their names in playdoh and on paper using Cuneiform and Hieroglyphics, the languages of these ancient civilizations. We also learned that the rulers of Egypt were called Pharaohs and we created their headdresses to wear. We also learned about how different holidays are celebrated around the world. In math, the students are solving word problems and learning to use different math strategies to solve math facts. The students and I are thrilled to be working and learning together!

Ms. DiMaggio’s first graders have been busy learning about ancient civilizations. We are learning about the different writings, religions and people of ancient times. We talked about how different parts of the world celebrate holidays. It is interesting to know about different cultures and how people celebrate around the world! In math we are learning about teen numbers. The kids are excited about setting and achieving some new goals to kick off 2023!

Mr. Rielly's technology classes have been learning about computer coding. Grades 2-3 are learning basic coding on the kodable.com website. Fourth graders have been using block coding, while fifth graders are beginning to type code themselves using basic javascript and python coding. The 3rd grade Pirates have been busy learning about Ancient Roman Civilization in reading. The students enjoyed learning about Greek Gods and the Roman Empire. They are culminating this unit by creating their own architectural carvings out of soap. In math, we are continuing to work on multiplication and division. The students are enjoying working in groups to practice their facts. The third grade teachers are super excited that the students are realizing that multiplication is needed in many areas of math.

Los estudiantes de música instrumental del Sr. Mackey están listos para comenzar la práctica de la banda grupal el viernes 6 de enero. Hi, my name is Emelia and I am in Mrs. Riccoboni’s class. I like math because it is fun! I have been doing much better in math this year. I like solving multiplication and division problems. I love that my classroom is decorated with Harry Potter things. I enjoy seeing my friends and my teachers. I also enjoy reading. Reading books silently is relaxing to me. This year I was lucky with getting my teacher Mrs. Riccoboni because she is nice and patient.
