Northern Hills Library News
Happenings from August/September 2019
Library Orientation
The students in K-5 attended library orientation during the second week of school. Kinder-second learned library procedures and book care. Third-fifth were taught the areas of the library and library procedures and book care. Using the library iPads, the upper grades tested their knowledge on the game show themed app Quizziz.
Properties of Matter
3rd grade reviewed properties of matter concepts in the library by trying different science stations. Some were low tech where the students needed to label types of matter and describe their properties. On others, the students used the library iPads or VDI computers to access BrainPop, Capstone ebooks or the database PebbleGo. They also scanned QR codes to self check their properties of matter classifying skills.
Library Updates
Thanks to our wonderful PTA, we added even more Harry Potter themed decorations! We also supplemented the decorations with funds raised by holding Book Fairs. We are now providing a seating area for the students to enjoy their books while others are checking out and plan on purchasing more furniture in the future.
News Crew
This year the announcements are handled by a fifth grade Leader in Me team. The students are required to have good grades, attendance and show leadership. They submitted an application and were required to audition. They've been doing an outstanding job!
International Dot Day
Northern Hills again this year participated in International Dot Day. All were encouraged to wear dots. Throughout the campus, students enjoyed different activities tied to the wonderful book, "The Dot". The Dot tells the story about no matter what we all matter and it is up to us to go out into the world and make our mark.
Reading Therapy Dogs
Our campus is fortunate to have two certified reading therapy dogs this school year. They are certified through the Delta Society and are part of their Pet Partners program. Both dogs were required to pass an evaluation and the handlers are required to take a course and pass it. On the top is "Chablis" and she works with fourth grade students and on the bottom is "Chance" and he works with third graders.
