2023-24 PBIS Kickoff with Kenyon athletes

Better Together

Families,

Our first full week ended with our PBIS Kickoff and all of our Kindergarten students in the building together. Students enjoyed being greeted by Kenyon athletes, and a building scavenger hunt that helped them learn the expectations for positive behavior in all areas. The last clue took them to the upside down tree for a class picture. Then, we had an all school assembly to put their prize, puzzle pieces, together to create a "Better Together" image. I've shared a video below that was shown to students in the assembly. By the way, our new sound system is amazing! This was a great way for us all to kickoff a wonderful school year together!

On September 25th, we will take an ALL School picture on the hillside near the red slide. Students will be asked to wear red and/or Wiggin Street spirit wear. Check out the information below to order spirit wear for the whole family!

There are lots of other great events planned for our school. Please read this week's update, so you don't miss out. The Upcoming Events will be very helpful in your planning.

We are so glad that you and your child are part of our Wiggin Street family. We are "Better Together"! Have a great weekend!

Best wishes,

Christy Grandstaff

Help Needed for Water Day

Water Day is scheduled for the afternoon of Tuesday, August 29th. If you are available to volunteer, please email me at cgrandstaff@mvcsd.us. It would be helpful to have some volunteers for set-up, clean-up, snow cones, running water, and possibly helping with some games. Thank you!

THE DAY YOU BEGIN by Jacqueline Woodson

I have enjoyed going into classrooms the past 2 days to read to students. This year, I chose to read THE DAY YOU BEGIN which is a story with a powerful message. Woodson explains that the day you truly begin living is the day that you realize that even though you may be different from everyone else, once you find the courage to share your story, the world will create the space or you that you deserve. Rafael Lopez is the illustrator of the book, and he purposefully drew rulers throughout to symbolize that we often measure ourselves compared to others. Students shared with the class and myself what makes them fabulously special.

The Spirit Wear sale will be open through Sept. 1st and includes the new "Rooted in Respect", traditional W, and retro "Wiggin Street Kids" (Parent, Teacher, and Alumni) shirts and other apparel! This is not a fundraiser, but an opportunity to show your school spirit!

Health Reminders

Kindergarten and new students need to make sure they have submitted their child's updated immunization records on the parent portal or they can be sent to Carla Johnson @ cjohnson@mvcsd.us or Anne Phillips @ aphillips@mvcsd.us.

If your student has rescue medication that needs to be kept at school (inhalers, EpiPens, etc.), please make sure to bring them into the school with the required paperwork filled out by the doctor as soon as possible. If anyone needs a form, feel free to reach out, so we can assure that your child has what they need to help keep them healthy and safe.

School Attendance

Our doors open at 8:40, so students should not be dropped off prior to that time for safety due to supervision. Attendance is taken at 9:00, and your child's success in school depends on them being prompt, so they are ready for morning routines which can reduce student anxiety. If they are tardy for some reason, you will need to come into the office to sign them in. If they are ill and need to be absent, please call the office. A note of explanation is needed in the office upon returning to school including medical excuses if applicable.

You can send a note with your child to the office in the morning if there is a change in their pick up routine. Sometimes changes are necessary during the school day for pick up. If you have a change in the way your child needs to go home, it is preferred that you send an email to your child's teacher and Anne, our secretary, at aphilllips@mvcsd.us. Phone calls must be made to the office before 2:00 pm if needed, so the change can be communicated.
