PRIDE: Choose Happy
For those of you new to Heavilin, PRIDE stands for Positivity, Respect, Integrity, Determination, Empathy. We have PRIDE days about once every six weeks. On PRIDE days, we meet in our K-5 PRIDE houses. Each student is assigned a color house, and we stay in our houses for as long as we are at Heaviin. This helps us connect with others outside of our grade levels while we focus on character development.
Students new to Heavilin will find out their house color on August 30. We will have an opportunity once again this year for families to purchase t-shirts at cost in house colors for PRIDE days. Information for ordering those shirts will come out in the coming weeks.
Time for Spell Bowl Try-Outs!
The team roster will be shared on 9/1/2023, and practices will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays after school. The season lasts until 11/15/2023. Time to start studying!
1) Read 20 minutes every school night, either independently or with someone
2) Study Math facts
3) Study Spelling lists
These three activities will have a noticeable impact on your child's growth this year.
Recorders for 5th Graders
A lot of 5th grade recorders have been coming in!! Hooray! If your child has not brought their instrument back, please have them put it in their backpack tonight and turn it in tomorrow.
The school issued students a recorder last year at the beginning of 4th grade. If you are new in 5th grade, the school will provide a recorder. If the one given last year has been lost, please purchase one to replace it so your student is ready to go for music.
Hello from the art room!
This message is mainly for my kindergarten parents but if you are a new-to-Heavilin family, this will apply to you, too!
In the Heavilin art room we use an app called "Artsonia." It is an online art gallery of your students' artwork that is only able to be seen by family members that have been added. For most of the year, your students' artwork stays in the art room. I pull from it for the three different art shows we have and to display around the building. Throughout the year, we will post pictures of the art we create to Artsonia so you can see it before it is brought home. The app also allows you to purchase things like coffee mugs or t-shirts with your students' artwork on it, but you are not obligated to do so. If you are a kindergarten parent or guardian, you should've gotten an email inviting you to connect to your student's profile. If you are a new-to-Heavilin family, please contact me through Class Dojo to get your student's profile set up.
If you have any questions about Artsonia, please also contact me through Class Dojo. I can't wait to have a great year full of creativity! - Mrs. Rucklos.
From Our PTO
Welcome Back Heavilin!
We are so excited for the start of the 2023-2024 school year! For those of you who are new to Heavilin, we are an active PTO, where nearly every dollar raised is reinvested in our children, teachers, and school. Our fundraising efforts help defray out-of-pocket expenses for our staff members and help fund many initiatives and events. We are always looking for volunteers to help! Thank you to all who stopped by our portion of back-to-school night! We hope you had a great time.
Heavilin E-Learning Green Folders:
The Heavilin PTO will be sending home a green folder with each student this week. Please make sure to return the folder back to school with your child since these folders will be used for E-Learning days. Some information that will be included in the folder:
1. Room Parent Sign Up: You must return the Room Parent Sign-Up Sheet and a background check form, which can be found on the Heavilin website, into the office no later than September 1st. Please direct any questions after reviewing the form to our Room Parent Representative, Tracy Matt at firstname.lastname@example.org.
2. PTO Calendar: Make sure to start marking your calendar with fun dates throughout the year! Please note that all dates are subject to change😊
3. Easy ways to Give Back to Heavilin PTO: Mabel’s Labels, Apples for Students, Box Tops for Education.
4. Volunteering Opportunities: There are many events listed and we are looking for volunteers! Please look at the materials and email us at email@example.com with your interests and we will get you connected.
5. Walkathon Information.
6. Fundraising Goals and how our funds are used.
Here’s what the Heavilin PTO has in store this month:
Walk a thon 2023: “Steppin’ to the Beat” - August 28th – September 1st.
The Heavilin Walk a thon fundraiser is our largest fundraiser of the year. This year, students will be “Steppin’ to the Beat". Last year, we were able to purchase indoor quality-grade reading rugs for each classroom, sponsor an assembly and hold kite day, in part, because of the success of this fundraiser. Each year, in addition to our regular budget, we attempt to fundraise enough for a special giveback to the school. This year, our goal is to purchase the needed Audio/Visual equipment for the gym, which will consist of a large retractable screen, projector and a Bluetooth sound system that will tie into existing equipment. We would also love to be able to fund another special school-wide experience. This Walk a thon is a celebration of different music genres and will include a Family Fun Walk at Ben Franklin Middle School track on August 30th from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. Classroom goals are $1000 per class with a school-wide goal of $25,000.00. Beginning Tuesday, each grade level will be competing for a classroom trophy that will change hands daily among class levels based on which classroom has raised the most funds measured day to day beginning at 7:00 a.m. each morning. The classroom in each grade level raising the most donations at the end of the week will be gifted the trophy to keep for year-long bragging rights.
In addition, the highest earning classes in grades K-2 and 3-5 will each receive a $200.00 Scholastic shopping spree for their classroom teacher. Prizes and rewards will be given to classes daily, while there will be a big celebration for all students if we reach our fundraising goals. While the purpose of this event is to raise money, a Walk a thon promotes physical fitness, builds school spirit and pride, instills a sense of accomplishment, and creates a fun and memorable way for our students to participate in supporting their education. Please support and help your student to collect donations. Note that nearly 100% of the funds raised go back to the students and staff of Heavilin. Be on the lookout for further information regarding this event.

Spirit Wear Campaign- August 14-August 27
Represent your school in style. We have added some new designs and additional products to our range of available products. With our spirit wear we help build a sense of unity, pride, and teamwork at school while we raise money for purchases that benefit all students here at Heavilin. Easy ordering online - webstore is open from August 14-August 27. Link here for the online store:
Also, if your child has outgrown or you have gently used spirit wear that you would like to donate, please consider sending items into the school office with a note for “Spirit Wear Swap.” We will have a “Spirit Wear Swap” at our first PTO meeting where parents are invited to take home gently used spirit wear.
Heavilin PTO Meetings
We are moving our PTO meetings to Thursdays this year. Please consider joining us! This is a great way to meet parents, get involved or find out what is going on at Heavilin. Back by popular demand, our first meeting will include a Spirit Wear Swap, where you can pick up a gently used piece of spirit wear donated by Heavilin families. We will again plan to have childcare available, and students can play on the playground or in the gym (weather dependent) during the meetings.
