November and December are always busy months for the Fine Arts department. We invite you to check out all the programs and activities students and teachers have been up to. As we close out the first half of the 2018-2019 year, we want to wish you all a safe and happy holiday season.

Teacher Feature

Meet Candace! Candace has been the modern dance instructor for both high schools for the past 18 years. Find out what inspired her to dance and why she became an instructor.


NHS band students participate in masterclasses on Wednesday, Nov. 7. Ten grad students and professors from OU, OSU, and NMSU worked with students on fundamentals to prepare them for the upcoming concert season.

Jolly Voices

NNHS men's choir perform their Winter concert under the direction of Jacob Gonzales and Stephen Ziegler on Thursday, Dec. 6. NNHS percussionists accompanied them during their performance.

Cleveland elementary presents their 4th grade program "Animal Kingdom" on Thursday, Dec. 6. The students performed under the direction of music teachers Megan Allen and Grant Sorum.

Giving Back

NNHS orchestra performs for the Cleveland County Retired Teachers Association at the Moore-Norman Technology Center on Friday, Dec. 7. This was the first time orchestra has played for the event.

To Grandmother's House We Go

NHS theatre presents their Fall musical, "Into the Woods." The show ran from Nov. 14-16 at NPS's Nancy O'Brian Center for the Performing Arts.

Star Struck

Reagan elementary presents their 4th grade music program "Go West!" on Thursday, Nov. 8. Reagan music is under the direction of teachers Brittni Bilyeu and Sara Riester.

Showcase of Talent

Students view and create art in NHS's third annual Creativity and Learning Showcase on Monday, Dec. 10. Teachers from all disciplines showcased the creative things that students have been participating in.

Dreaming of Christmas

Jackson elementary 4th graders perform "The Nutcracker" on Tuesday, Dec. 11. The performance was put on under the direction of first-year Norman music teachers Erica Haverly and Ben Jorge.

NHS jazz band performs their Winter concert on Friday, Dec. 7. Check them out below!

Just Dance

NPS's Nancy O'Brian Center for Performing Arts plays host to Oklahoma High School Dance Festival Nov. 29 & 30. The festival showcased dancers from more than 13 high schools from across the state as well as the UCO dance company. The festival featured a range of genres including ballet, modern, jazz, hip hop, Afro Cuban, contemporary and more. This year was the first time Norman had hosted the festival since 2012.

A Night to Remember

NNHS vocal music teacher Stephen Ziegler recently prepared his kids in the Canterbury Youth Voices Central Chorale to sing Britten's War Requiem, a difficult and rarely performed work. The work was presented on November 11th, the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day, in collaboration with Canterbury Voices, Oklahoma City University, the Oklahoma City Philharmonic, and world renowned soloists at the OKC Civic Center.

Funny Faces

Natalie Sklaney's art class at AMS shows off "ugly mugs" they made from clay. After the mugs were painted and glazed, the class drank root beer from them.

The Abominable Snow-band

IMS band performs their winter concert at the Nancy O'Brian Center on Wednesday, Dec. 5. Under the direction of Tristan Blankenship (pictured as a yeti), the band performed traditional holiday pieces as well as "The Abominable Snowman."


Congrats to:

-Band and orchestra students Tanner Barker, Kai Cheng, Theo Cohen , Ben Egan, Henry Ingles, I-Kang Kennedy, Mason Leidner, Surya Miranda, Catie Thai, Matt Tyler, Christie Yang and Noah Zinn for making OkMEA All-State honor groups. The students will perform at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center on Saturday, January 19th.

-Vocal music students Tal Avance, Raz Bagajewicz, Jamie Bowen, Lily Campbell, Theo Cohen, Kelsey Hayes, Katelyn Loomis, Taylor Loomis, Evelyn Price and Audrey Sondag for making OkMEA All-State honor groups. The students will perform at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center on Saturday, January 19th.

-Jack Adams, Psalm Ambos, Tal Avance, Gwen Davis, Jake Jackson and Anna Rowe for making American Choral Directors Association national choral groups.

-IMS orchestra who was invited to perform at the OkMEA convention in January.
