Cyberbullying

Definition

The act of using the internet or an electronic device such as a computer, cellphone or tablet to repeatedly harass someone. Its a very harmful method of bullying because the bully can bully anytime, anywhere and anonymously.

The Bully

  • Often been a victim of cyberbullying themselves
  • Oftentimes low self esteem
  • Sometimes does it just for fun
  • Thinks its just a joke
  • Can hide be a shield of anonymity

Victims

Anyone can become a victim of bullying but the following groups tend to be victimized in higher number:

  • Those with low and failing grades
  • Students in middle school and junior high
  • Student who identify themselves as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender
  • Students with low self esteem

Consequences to Victims

  • Poor school performance
  • Low self esteem
  • Increase in delinquent behaviors (drug use, alcohol use, gang activity)
  • Feeling of loneliness, humiliation, insecurity, fearfulness
  • Increase in aggression and violence
  • Suicide in extreme cases
