Cyberbullying
Definition
The act of using the internet or an electronic device such as a computer, cellphone or tablet to repeatedly harass someone. Its a very harmful method of bullying because the bully can bully anytime, anywhere and anonymously.
The Bully
- Often been a victim of cyberbullying themselves
- Oftentimes low self esteem
- Sometimes does it just for fun
- Thinks its just a joke
- Can hide be a shield of anonymity
Victims
Anyone can become a victim of bullying but the following groups tend to be victimized in higher number:
- Those with low and failing grades
- Students in middle school and junior high
- Student who identify themselves as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender
- Students with low self esteem
Consequences to Victims
- Poor school performance
- Low self esteem
- Increase in delinquent behaviors (drug use, alcohol use, gang activity)
- Feeling of loneliness, humiliation, insecurity, fearfulness
- Increase in aggression and violence
- Suicide in extreme cases
