From The Principal
As this will be the last full length newsletter for 2022, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the parent community for your support during this my first year as Principal. I’ve appreciated the warm interaction that I’ve had with so many of you and this has helped me settle into the role. Now being established in the school I look forward to focusing on several school improvement projects next year, while also working to preserve those wonderful elements of the school that I have inherited.
One absolutely fantastic part of the school is our highly engaged Parents’ Association. A special thanks to Heidi and Bree – PA Co-Chairs – who are committed to enhancing the positive community vibe through special events. The PA’s handiwork was on display most recently at the Colour Run where the combination of a waterslide, paint and sugar-filled food created a wonderful carnival type atmosphere. We look forward to enjoying the ongoing contribution that our energetic PA will provide in 2023.
I’d like to acknowledge the work of the Glendowie School Board. Our board does an important job by overseeing the strategic direction of the school and keeping a close eye on financial and property matters. It is a big commitment being a board member. I think our longest meeting this year closed at 10.55pm after starting at 6.30pm. A special mention should go to Dawn Garbett who has served on the Glendowie School Board for over 20 years, many of those as Chairperson (or Presiding Member as the role is now known). The support of the entire Board through this year has been invaluable.
We now have a number of expressions of interest from students – who will be in Years 7 and 8 next year – hoping to attend AIMs Games in September. The next step will be to arrange a parent information session in February, so that all the relevant information can be shared with parents who wish to send their children on this trip.
Unfortunately our new technology block is behind schedule. The design process took far longer than expected. However, the plans have now been submitted to Auckland Council and we hope to begin the tender process early next year. My sincere apologies for the delay, which has been frustrating for everyone.
Mrs Sharon Elliott, the teacher in charge of our Somerville satellite class, is moving back to the base school next year. We wish her all the best for this move and thank her for the support and effort she has put in to make Room 30 a special part of our school.
Congratulations to the Midnight Mystics – our Year 6 netball team – who won their summer league competition this year.
Well done to all those students who represented the school at the various interschool athletics sports events. A special mention goes to Chloe M, Elodie C, Zoe S and Felicity V who made it through to the Auckland Intermediate Champs in Papakura.
Move Up Day was a huge success on Wednesday. It was great to have most of our new staff in the school for the day so that most students were able to meet their new teacher. Hopefully our new approach to transitioning students to the next year level will mean there is less stress about starting the new year -- for both students and parents.
Finally, on behalf of the school staff and Board I’d like to wish our parent community a peaceful holiday season. I hope you all get some time to relax and enjoy a merry Christmas. We look forward to seeing you all around in the new year, although let’s hope that it doesn’t feel like the start of school rolls around too quickly.

Last day of 2022
School starts next year for students on Wednesday 1st February. The school office will be open from Wednesday 25th January but emails are checked regularly during the holidays so anything urgent will be attended to.
Notice re Kindo for Leavers
If your family is leaving our school and has been using Kindo, please make sure to stop any regular automatic payments that have been set up before the school year finishes. You may also need to transfer or close your account which can be done as follows:
- Not sure if your new school is using Kindo? If you’re not sure if your new school is using Kindo, you can either ask them directly or go to “My Details” in your Kindo account and click on the list of schools to see if your new school is listed.
- New school IS using Kindo. If your new school is using Kindo, simply click on the new school from the list in “My Details” of your Kindo account and you’ll be attached to the new school’s menu. Any balance on your Kindo account will remain available to spend with the new school.
- New school is NOT using Kindo, or you no longer need Kindo. If you need to close your Kindo account, use the “Close Account” button within the “My Details” section of your Kindo account. You can either withdraw your account balance or choose to donate your balance to the school. Please note that all withdrawals will be made via electronic payment to your New Zealand bank account. Kindo is unable to process cash withdrawals.
If you are wanting to withdraw your Kindo account balance or make a donation that exceeds Kindo’s threshold (currently more than $10,000 total within one year), Kindo may need to undertake some identity checks on you to comply with its obligations under the Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Countering Financing of Terrorism (CFT) Act 2009. Please action the withdrawal or donation in your Kindo account as outlined above and if these AML checks are necessary Kindo will advise of the next steps required in this regard. Kindo has endeavoured to make this process as pain-free as possible and appreciates your patience.

Thank you Librarians !
We recently had a delicious shared lunch and yummy ice creams to celebrate our wonderful student librarians. Our student librarians are on duty before school and at lunchtimes, making sure all the books are returned and shelved and that the library is running smoothly. Our library is an amazing space because of our student librarians.
Abby, Tom and Baxter got special recognition for constantly being reliable, friendly and hardworking. Great job!

Each year we collect items for local foodbanks to help those in need over the holiday break. As a special treat, students do not need to wear school uniform on the last day of school and bring a donation of food on the last day. All items are gratefully received, some ideas include:
Non perishable food items eg canned goods (tinned fruit, baked beans) rice, pasta, pasta sauce, peanut butter, flour, etc.
Household items: disposable nappies, soap powder, etc. This year we will split the donations between Ruapotaka Marae and the Glen Innes Foodbank. If you wish to donate extra items before the last day, we shall have a collection box in the office area.
EXTRA OPTION: Christmas Present
If you wish to contribute a small gift to a child in need, we will also be collecting Christmas gifts that will be distributed by the Foodbanks. They can be wrapped and labelled boy/girl/general or unwrapped gifts. We will leave a box outside the office. Presents can be dropped off at any time.
Mr Kloppers also has some scooters which haven't been taken home. Again, please have a look and collect anything your children may have left behind.
Colour Run 2022: Wow, what a fantastic afternoon we had at the Colour Run on Friday! It was great to see everyone having a blast on the giant waterslide and all the obstacles whilst being covered in colour powder. The bouncy castle was popular, as was Mr Whippy and A-Lan's food truck and thankfully after weeks of adverse weather, the sun came out for us! We raised approximately $3,500.00 which will go towards fitting out the new technology block. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped to ensure this event ran smoothly, as always, we couldn't do it without your help. A big thank you to our amazing sponsor Scarbro Civil, we appreciate your generosity and support.
Collection for Ruapotaka Marae & Glen Innes Food Bank: On Thursday 15th December (last day of Term 4) we will be collecting food and non - food items for the Ruapotaka Marae as well as the Glen Innes Food Bank. We ask that each child donate an item of non perishable food such as tins and packaged goods, or non - food items such as washing powder or nappies/wipes etc. This is an annual collection and always greatly appreciated, it is a lovely opportunity for our school community to support those in need.
Frosty Friday: Please note there will be NO Frosty Friday on the last day of Term 4, but we will be back in Term1.
Calendar Art: We are packing up your orders and they will be delivered to your child's classroom early next week.
Camp Night Term 1 2023: Dust off your tents over the Summer holidays and keep an eye out for more information on our annual School Camp Night!
We'd like to wish all of our school families a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Stay safe over the holidays and have a fabulous school break, we are looking forward to an action packed 2023 with lots of fun events!
