Math Updates
This week in Math we reviewed some 2nd grade concepts that will help us throughout the year. We took the "time" to revisit analog clocks and tell time to the nearest minute. In order to tell time proficiently in 3rd grade, students must be able to read and draw times to the nearest minute. This includes placing the hour hand in the appropriate place (for example, half way between the 6 and 7 for 6:30).
We reviewed rounding numbers to the nearest ten and hundred as well. This will help us when we need to estimate sums and differences between numbers.
Building a READING LIFE
This week in Reading, students learned that the way you set up your reading life may determine how successful you are at learning to love reading.
They learned that if you want to make reading the best it can be you should: find a quiet spot to read, talk to others about their books, find books that interest them, make sure they are "just right" books, and finally read their books as if they are GOLD.
They learned that if you act like a curmudgeon when it is time to read, you will read like a curmudgeon! BUT if you take the time to have a good attitude about reading, you are much more likely to enjoy the book and find it interesting. We took the time to do all of these things at school and plan for how we can do them at home as well. We want to make sure that we are the best readers we can be!!
Reading Logs will be filled out in school and at home every day. We will be looking at these during reading groups to talk about what we are reading as well as to look at patterns in our reading. These patterns will help us set goals as we look for things we can improve upon.
Word Study
Word Study is starting on Monday!
Monday nights- Students are to sort their words and record them in their notebooks. They are to also record their discovery or rule for the week.
Tuesday and Wednesday nights- Students should sort their words and read them as they sort. They can practice writing them on paper, whiteboards, or typing them. NO WRITTEN homework is required on these nights.
Thursday nights- Students are to ask an adult to quiz them on their words. They write the headers and then record the words as they are called out. The adult should use the notebook to correct the sort and ask the student to practice any words that were spelled incorrectly. This can be done on the back of the homework sheet. This paper should then be returned to school Friday morning.
Friday- there will be a test given
Writing long & strong
Our current unit in writing is Narrative Writing, where we focus on writing stories about small moments in our lives.
This week in Writing, students learned what Writer's Notebooks look like in 3rd grade. We talked about how we need to be organized and write neatly throughout the year so that we can revisit our writing for editing or to add to our stories. We also started generating ways to help us come up with ideas to write about when we get "stuck" or tired

A BIG Thank You!!
Giant Bonus Cards
Giant Bonus Cards are our BIGGEST fundraising source. The link to register Bonus Cards is: http://giantfoodstores.com/aplus/register-card/?_requestid=1157213
Cursive
We found a "smidge" of extra time so we kicked off our cursive writing. Students learned the proper way to slant their papers when writing, how to sit tall with feet on the floor, and finally how to write the lowercase letters a and d in cursive. It was so much fun!!!
Technology
This week the students were introduced to Everyday Mathematics games online. Login information is stapled into the front of their planner. I also sent this home on Back to School Night.
