Notes from Dr. Irvin

Your WGHS Weekly eNews for January 13

Hello Parents and Guardians,

Sunday’s New York Times article “Fear Rises as More Unions Push for Remote Learning” summarizes our shared experience over the last two years: “For many parents and teachers, the pandemic has become a slog of anxiety over the risk of infection, child care crisis, and the tedium of school-through-a-screen and, most of all, chronic instability.” I certainly don’t need to remind you this has been our experience as well--easily the most challenging time in education.

While we have a common foe, not all schools are in the same place in our third winter of the pandemic. Size, finances, and the political landscape are some of the varied factors that impact on the ability and manner schools address our current state. Relative to many other schools, we at Webster Groves are fortunate. Our size allows us to be more nimble and our community’s conscientiousness has worked to limit spread. Perhaps most importantly, our staff’s courage and solidarity have the greatest impact. It is very hard to fully share the work done by Mrs. Gayna Winkelmann and Dr. Shiree Yeggins to adjust to always changing circumstances to get classes covered by substitutes. We have had several retired staff members joins us as substitutes. Our nurses, Rachel Huertas and Natalie Mertens, have taken in information on staff and student health and provided reassurance and support. Counselors have worked double-duty on scheduling courses for next year and supporting emerging student wellness concerns. Many thanks to them for their contributions each and every hour to make schooling work for our students.

Best,

Matt Irvin

School Closing Information Due to Inclement Weather

Communication

Should bad weather or other adverse conditions prompt us to consider closing schools, the District will make a decision as early as possible. Information will be available through the following outlets:

Late Start due to Inclement Weather

The District will consider opening schools with a late start or calling for an early dismissal depending on weather conditions. A late start would keep children off the street during the busy morning rush hour if roads are expected to be clear within a few hours; early dismissal would allow students to get home safely before bad weather moves into the area. Quick breakfasts would be available when school doors open before classes begin. Students should arrive no earlier than 15 minutes before the start of school. (This doesn’t include Ambrose Preschool children.)

All schools would close at their regular times and there would be no Adventure Club.

School Start Time Staff Arrival Time Student Arrival Time

Webster Groves High School Start Time: 9:40 a.m.

Staff arrival time: 9:10 a.m.

Student arrival time: 9:25 a.m.

Early Dismissal: 12:30 p.m.

All other schools can be found here.

** Late starts will be announced through the same communication outlets listed above **

Late Start Bus Times

With a late start, bus schedules will run one hour and 15 minutes later than the regularly scheduled time.

Upcoming ACT and SAT National Test Dates (Saturdays)

Junior parents: Is your child planning to attend a four year college or university? While many colleges have been “test optional” for the past two years as a result of covid, plans for next year are not yet clear and many colleges will still require ACT or SAT scores for admission and/or scholarships. Here are the ACT and SAT test dates for the rest of the school year.

Webster Groves Parent Advisory Council Meeting in January

The Webster Groves Parent Advisory Council (PAC) will meet on Thursday, January 13 at 6:00 pm over Zoom. Everyone is welcome! We will be joined by the Director of Special Education for WGSD, Shantay Wakefield, along with other SSD administrators who will give a brief presentation and answer questions. PAC representatives communicate regularly and directly with SSD and WG administrators about the needs and interests of students who have IEPs and 504 plans.
