LEG Progress Monitoring
Focused on Tips and Support For Enrolled Students
Progress Monitoring & Quick Progress Reports for LEGs
As the Local Education Guide (LEG)/Coach/Mentor you are an important part of the progress monitoring team. This smore is designed to provide you with some tips and resources in your support of student success.
Logging in on a consistent day/time weekly will provide you with a true snapshot of how your students are progressing and highlight some items to investigate further. It will also provide a consistent time stamp if you are downloading data locally.
This document (and the screencasts it contains) will visually walk you through Progress Monitoring. These directions provide guidance and strategies for monitoring online student progress in the Student Information System (SIS) called Genius; including how to generate your own Quick Progress Report for a conversation with your student(s).
Our upcoming Lunch and Learn on Thursday, October 5th from 11:30am - 12:30pm will highlight strategies for progress monitoring and also provide you with some information on how you can change up the data you are seeing in Genius. For example, did you notice a new widget at the bottom of your main page that shows the WVS Teacher contact information? LINK TO JOIN VIA COLLABORATE ULTRA DESKTOP CONFERENCING
Things to Remember to Streamline Progress Monitoring and Help Students Get Off to a Great Start
- KNOW your role in Genius! Is it an Affiliate role for "seeing all students" and creating student accounts or is it "Coach" for supporting and monitoring student progress for students you specifically are associated with? Not sure? Contact our WVS Helpdesk for assistance.
- BEFORE creating a new student, please search to make sure the student account doesn't already exist (deep search). If you get a message that the student does exist but can't see them, contact WVS - we will make the student account visible for you. You will also want to review their account information (i.e. grade level, email, parent/guardian, etc.).
- Don't forget to add a Coach/LEG to the student account.
- Don't forget to add parent(s)/guardian(s) - but if a brother or sister already has an account associated to a parent/guardian, contact WVS - we will associate that parent/guardian to the new student so there aren't duplicate accounts for the parent/guardian.
- When creating a new student account, make sure you include a valid email for the student. The email needs to allow the student to receive communications from outside vendors (i.e. - WVS log in credentials, WVS teacher communications).
- The start date of a course is the date that the course will be activated for the student and the date the 28 day trial period will start.
- Log-in credentials for students do not change with a new school year. If you have a returning student that does not remember their credentials, log in to your LEG account, go to student tab in Genius, find and click on that student, click on re-send credentials from the main screen. This will re-send their username/password to their email. REMINDER: the email with the student's login credentials is sent when the student account is created.
- Check your students' end dates; they automatically go out 20 weeks. If you want your student(s) to complete in a shorter amount of time, you can change the end date (page 5). If your student needs longer than the 20 weeks, please see the WVS Extension Policy.
- When placing Drop Requests, please make sure to select "Waiting Review" under status. Otherwise, WVS will not see the request and it may not be processed in a timely manner. Click here to view Drop Policy
Upcoming Communications Being Sent to Students and Guardians Through Genius
- Powtoons on Student Tips for Success and Navigation Tips
- Access to Homework Help Tutoring
- Informing parents that have Guardian Accounts in the system how they can be a part of the progress monitoring team, too.
You will be able to see these communications in Genius on the Student Page>Communication Widget>View Communications.
New - Guardian Access As Part of the Progress Monitoring and Success Support Team
This change will help parents continue to progress monitor and be a part of the student success team. Not sure if the parent of a student has a guardian account? In Genius go to student tab, click on name of student, in the Main Widget click on Guardian Accounts to see if they are listed or to create. Visual Overview of Access and Navigation in LMS
More Tips to Facilitate Progress Monitoring
· By having students send electronically or print off a copy of the performance grade page you can easily see progress and know when conversations are needed. It is a great way to hold them accountable, too.
· Keep a file on each student locally for any relevant information and completion reports.
· Facilitate the student’s learning process by connecting them to local IT, helping them reach out via email or teacher's Connect Time office hours or tutoring for content specific support. This includes encouraging students to report issues, including what they believe are errors in course content, too.
· Be aware if local policy requires proctoring of quizzes and exams. Contact the instructor for passwords.
· For technical issues, start with your IT department, tech support, or Internet provider. Examples of technical issues: course access, course not loading completely (browser issue or filter issue), email issues, plug-ins needed, etc. We can provide curriculum review for testing on devices being used and our Computer Technology Readiness for WVS Online Courses document contains technology requirements for our online courses.
· Other issues can be directed to WVS support at wvshelpdesk@cesa9.org. The helpdesk is monitored weekdays (non-holidays) from 8:00-4:00 p.m.
· LEGs/Mentors, don’t be afraid to ask for assistance on enrollments, policies, procedures or other questions regarding the WVS Program at wvshelpdesk@cesa9.org or 715-453-1953. We are available weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m
You can use the Genius system to observe student progress, view their grade books, and online activity at any time. You can also edit student demographics, register students, or place drop requests for courses and have lots of data at your fingertips to support you in your progress monitoring.
