PRE-SCHOOL EDUCATION
For Ages 3 - 6
A CHILD-CENTERED PRE-SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE
Kingwood Montessori's Pre-School classroom is based upon a profound respect for the child's personality. The child works following his or her own interests and is allowed a large measure of independence which forms the basis of self-discipline. As each child progresses and successfully completes the self-correcting manipulative exercises, he or she develops confidence in his or her own innate abilities.
Activities are centered on five focus areas:
SENSORIAL / PRACTICAL LIFE
Sensorial exercises assist the child with the ability to discriminate, refine, and sharpen their senses, as well as for accurate judgments on perceptual experiences (size, shape, weight, color, sound, etc.). The practical life exercises help the child to master daily life activities, increase concentration, prepare for writing and reading while refining motor control.
MATHEMATICAL DEVELOPMENT
Basic concepts of math are given first, in the concrete with the introduction of the quantity 1-10, and progressively 1-1000. Later, these symbols are given by using the manipulative apparatus, the basic operations are introduced.
WRITING / READING
Preparation for writing and reading is begun through the phonetic introduction of the sandpaper letters. Word building and preliminary reading exercises take place through a natural progression, which reflects a child's personal readiness. Simultaneously, print and cursive letters are practiced and penmanship, as well as creative writing is introduced.
CULTURAL ACTIVITIES
Through the cultural work, the child is introduced to the world and the living -things within it. The Montessori classroom offers the child studies in History, Geography, and the Sciences.
SPANISH
Spanish programs are based on oral comprehension. The children learn vocabulary and conversational skills while singing songs and playing games.
MUSIC
Music involves the development of the children's awareness and love of music through singing, movement to music, and listening to music.
VISUAL ARTS
Art is presented by the classroom teachers. At elementary level, there is a full time art specialist on staff to guide the children in their exploration of the world of art.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
We offer our children opportunities for movement through dance, drama, sports and we have a Yoga specialist for all levels.
