After more than a month of flexible Learning, I want to reach out to you to give you end of school year closing information given to us by the Archdioceses of Philadelphia. First, I want to thank you for all of the support that you have provided during this crisis. It is only with your cooperation that the children of our school have been able to progress and will be ready to enter a new grade next fall.
We have been asked about final grades for this year and what impact will flexible learning have on the final grades. Students will receive a grade for the third trimester and a final grade. The Archdioceses have worked on appropriate practices for grading in a flexible learning environment and have slightly adjusted the final year calculation as well.
Since flexible learning is more a of a challenge for many students for a variety of reasons, we did not want this marking period to have a harmful impact on students. However, we realize that our students have really tried during this period so we tried to build a fair system that is reflective of both. First, we used the grades in the first two marking periods as a “foundation” for the basis of the final grades. We asked our teaches to become aware of those grades and use them and as they develop a grade for the final trimester compare it to the foundation grade and make sure it is reflective of this. The archdiocese has also weighted the final trimester a little differently to reflect the shorter time in the final trimester and to accentuate the work already completed in the first two thirds of the year. Therefore, the first and second trimester will be weighed as a 36% of the final grade and the third trimester will be 28% of the grade.
We plan on ending direct instruction on Monday, June 1st. From Tuesday, June 2nd to Friday, June 5th, students will finish their assessments, classwork and projects. During the week of June 8th we will set up times to collect books and return any personal belongings that students left in school. Since we will be still practicing social distancing, we will need to schedule a time to come and collect materials (more info. will follow).
We will send a separate communication that will discuss any activities related to graduation of our Eight grade class.
Again, Thank you for your support during this crisis. Through your efforts and the efforts of our teachers we were able to accomplish a great deal of learning.
