Weekly Family Update Issue #2
Oak Valley Middle School
Principal's Message
It's the most wonderful time of the year!! School is starting!! I am so excited to welcome your children to our school and the start of the 2019-2020 school year. The beginning of school is often filled with excitement and nervous anticipation. If you are new to Oak Valley, I want to let you know that there are over 100 employees here that have dedicated their lives to educating the children of this community. My hope is that you will find this school to be a truly special place where staff are dedicated to our mission of putting students first and creating the best learning experience possible for kids. For those families who are returning, we are eager to see your students again and look forward to encouraging them to pursue even higher levels of thinking and personal achievement.
As your new principal, I will begin my work this year by amplifying our student culture and working to ensure that all students have the opportunity to flourish in the kind, caring, and supportive environment they deserve. This type of environment is key to student success both academically and emotionally and one that I demand for all students. In addition, I will work to promote and highlight the amazing achievements of our students in the classroom and in the extracurricular activities students need to find that positive connection to school.
Oak Valley is an amazing place, I have quickly learned that in my short time here. I am honored to be a part of this Falcon Family and I look forward to another phenomenal school year. On behalf of all of us here at Oak Valley, we welcome you back for the 15th year of Oak Valley, we are all truly honored to care for and teach your students.
Beaming with Falcon Pride,
Colin Young

PTSA Update
Hello Falcon Family!
We hope you had a fantastic summer and are ready for an exciting 2019-2020 academic year!
In this era of district budget struggles, financial support for our classrooms is critical so we can continue to provide the 21st century learning experience that our students deserve each day.
We are using an online tool called Totem for OVMS PTSA Membership Registration. Check it out at the link below:
https://jointotem.com/ca/san-diego/oak-valley-middle-school-ptsa/join
Your OVMS PTSA membership gets you the national discounts located here:
https://capta.org/join/member-perks/
We also have a "DONATE" button on Totem to make your student buyout donation ($150) or select a custom amount to fund your Falcon for the entire year (Fundraising Buyout) or provide a custom donation for Art Corps, the Falcon Center, and Teacher Mini-Grants. We are doing our part to go paperless and ensure you automatically have a receipt for your transactions.
Thank you in advance for your generous support for the OVSM PTSA.
Cheers,
Kellie Keller
Proud Falcon Parent and OVMS President

New Cell Phone Policy
There will be a change to our cell phone policy for the 2019-2020 school year. This change will bring us into alignment with the policy at the other five middle schools in Poway Unified. This change is reflected in our student handbook which is available on our website. Our goal is for students to be focused on their school work, friendships, and unplug while at school. We thank you for your support.
CELL PHONES/ELECTRONIC DEVICES
Cell phones and other electronic devices are brought to campus at the student’s own risk. OVMS and PUSD are not responsible for lost, damaged or stolen devices.
Cell Phone Rules:
- Phones must remain OFF (not on SILENT) and out of sight during the ENTIRE school day, 8:20-3:05. This includes during instructional time, lunch, passing periods, and restroom visits.
- If a phone call needs to be made during school hours, please come to the office and ask for permission to use your cell phone.
- If your phone has a camera in it, you are not permitted to use that feature on our campus for any reason, including before or after school.
- There is NO cell phone use in the library, classrooms, or bathrooms at any time.
- At times, teacher may permit the use of cell phones or tablets in class to support learning. This is at the discretion of the teacher. Phones must be turned off and stowed away in accordance with school policy prior to leaving class.
Office telephones are always available and may be used with staff permission. Students are also welcome to come to the office to use their cell phones to contact parents.
Cell Phone Consequences:
- Violation of school cell phone policy may result in a support call and confiscation of the phone by school staff. The student may pick up the phone from the front office at the end of the school day.
- A second violation may require parent to come to school to pick up the phone or give verbal confirmation for the student to pick up their device.
- Repeated violations may result in loss of phone on campus.
We appreciate your support as we transition our students to this new policy.
