Attendance
Regular attendance is important in your student’s current and future successes. Just missing 10% of the school year, that’s 18 days or 2 days a month can knock students off track. As a caregiver you can help support your student’s attendance by:
- Maintaining daily routines, such as, homework and getting a good night’s sleep.
- Try not to schedule medical appointments during the school day.
- Talk with your student about their classes and school. Sometimes academic or behavioral struggles can lead to absenteeism.
- Most importantly communicate with the school. We are here to support you and want to work together to help your student be successful.
- If you have concerns about your students attendance please reach out to the school.
Meals During Spring Break Will Continue
Our March meal pick up schedule WILL NOT change over Spring Break. As scheduled, meals WILL be available for pick up at GIS on 3/31/2021 between 5:00 and 6:00 p.m. Thank you!
A Few Reminders
- Morning Procedures - In an effort to keep everyone safe , we are still asking that students do not get out of their vehicles until 8:25 A.M. We appreciate your cooperation!
- Facial Coverings - Due to the new Emergency Order that MDHHS announced on October 29, 2020, students and staff are required to wear their masks at all times, except during meals.
- Health Screener - Please remember to screen your child every day before sending them to school. We ask that you do not send your child to school if they are sick.
- Hygiene and Social Distancing - Please remind your child the importance of proper hand washing and sanitizing. We will be practicing proper hygiene at school, along with social distancing.
- Contact Tracing - We work closely with the Health Department of Northwest Michigan to determine the need for contact tracing. If the school or Health Department notifies you that your child has been in close contact with a positive or probable case, we ask for your patience and understanding with this process. We will error on the side of caution to keep each and every one of our students and staff safe and healthy.
- Dress for the Weather - We go outside for recess as often as possible. We will be outside for recess unless the wind chill is below zero on the Fahrenheit scale or the conditions are just too wet to be out in the elements. Please make sure that your child brings appropriate coats, hats, gloves or mittens, and boots.
- School Hours -8:25 A.M.-2:40 P.M
- Emergency Drills - Emergency drills will be practiced throughout the school year.
Gaylord Community Schools Wellness Policy
As required by law, the Board of Education establishes the following wellness policy for the Gaylord School District. The Board recognizes that good nutrition and regular physical activity affect the health and wellbeing of the District's students. Furthermore, research concludes that there is a positive correlation between a student's health and well-being and his/her ability to learn. Moreover, schools can play an important role in the developmental process by which students establish their health and nutrition habits by providing nutritious meals and snacks through the schools' meal programs, by supporting the development of good eating habits, and by promoting increased physical activity both in and out of school.
The Board, however, believes this effort to support the students' development of healthy behaviors and habits with regard to eating and exercise cannot be accomplished by the schools alone. It will be necessary for not only the staff, but also parents and the public at large to be involved in a community-wide effort to promote, support, and model such healthy behaviors and habits.
The policy in its entirety can be found on our website, www.gaylordschools.com

Gaylord Wellness Center
Students are eligible to receive immunizations, flu shots, and check-ups during clinic hours at our school. To schedule an appointment contact the Wellness Center at 989-732-6890. Parents are not required to be present during the visit. Students will be called into the clinic from their classroom. This is a great opportunity to have your students immunizations updated. This service is offered to our students at no cost.
