The purpose of the HPS POY Award is to acknowledge and honor parents for exceptional parenting skills and achievement, as well as, contribution, service, and leadership in support of children, families, schools, and communities.

Black History Month
Since 1976, February has been proclaimed Black History Month, with nationwide events honoring the history and contributions of African-Americans.
The theme for February 2019 is "Black Migrations", which follows the continuous movement of blacks from American South to the industrialized North and beyond from roughly 1916 to 1970.
African-American migration included relocation from farms to cities, and from the South to the Northeast and Midwest. The period gives rise to a growing number of black industrial leaders and entrepreneurs; the emergence of new music, genres like ragtime, blues and jazz; and the Harlem Renaissance in New York, which ushered in a rich period of African-American arts.
