Volunteer Tutor Training

Starts October 30

Volunteer Tutors Needed in Lewis County!

Literacy of Northern New York has a waiting list of adult students who need help with literacy skills. The agency particularly needs volunteers willing to tutor reading and English as a second language in Lowville.

Literacy of Northern NY offers two different tutor training courses.

Basic Literacy Learner Course

People interested in teaching reading can take the 12-hour Basic Literacy Learner course (BLL). Participants learn about phonics, word patterns, language experience, fluency, vocabulary development, reading comprehension and lesson planning.

English Language Learner

The 12-hour English Language Learner (ELL) course allows volunteers to meet people from other countries who live in our community and are struggling to speak English better. Volunteers do not need to speak another language to tutor English.

Mandatory Orientation

For either course, volunteers are required to attend the orientation class and the successful tutoring class.

Pre-registration is required for all courses and there is a $25 fee for the course textbook

Orientation - Tuesday, Oct. 30 from 10am to 1pm

Basic Literacy Learner 1 - Thursday, Nov. 1 from 10am to 1pm

Basic Literacy Learner 2 - Tuesday, Nov. 6th from 10am to 1pm

After successfully completing a training course, volunteers are matched with one adult who needs assistance. LNNY provides the books and materials used by the tutor and student. Tutoring sessions are held in public places such as libraries. Pre-registration is required for all courses.
