Life, Love, and Liberty

Hermia's Playlist

Love takes unexpected turns.

One theme that pops up over and over again in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. Is that love can take some unexpected turns. Hermia has to runaway with Lysander in order to marry him, and then halfway through the book, Lysander suddenly loves Helena! She represents unexpected turns in love because she had to run away with Lysander, suddenly he loved Hermia, then he loved her again, and then they could get married!
Stromae - Papaoutai

Track 1 Papoutai by Stromae

Hermia would most likely listen to this song when her father was forcing her to choose between Demetrius, being a lifelong nun, or death. I think the lines "Où t'es, papaoutai?" (which means: Papa, where are you?) fits Hermia really well right now. Her father isn't really "with" her, and she's looking for the good side of him, the one that will see things through her eyes. The tone of the song is sad and angry at the same time, which is what Hermia feels towards her father. And in the end, she excepts what her father is and decides to run away, sort of like how the boy in the video excepts what his father is.
30 Seconds To Mars Do Or Die Lyrics

Track 2- Time To Do or Die by Thirty Seconds To MARS

This song is perfect for when Hermia is going to run away. If she stays, she will either be a nun or die. If she runs away, she gets to marry Lysander. So for Hermia, it really is time to do or die! The lines

"I don't want to live a lie" - Hermia doesn't want to marry Demetrius and live a lie where she loves him.

"I will never forget the moment...". - Hermia will never forget the moment she chose to runaway

"And the story goes on" - Hermia and Lysander's story together will continue

"I will never forget this night "- Hermia probably won't forget the night she ran away!

"Fate is coming, that I know, time is running, got to go" - Hermia knows she has to make a decision and time is running out, so she has to run away.

The song is very hopeful and exciting, which is what Hermia would be feeling as she ran away. The tone is very upbeat and kind of makes you feel like everything will be alright in a way, and that is what Hermia wants. For everything to be alright.

Lyrics~Stand By Me-Ben E. King

Track 3 - Stand by Me by Ben. E. King

This song is singing about standing by someone. Hermia would want Lysander to "stand with" her as they ran away. She feels a bit uncertain about running away and would probably want Lysander to assure her that it's the right thing to do.

"And the land is dark, and the moon is the only light we'll see. No I won't be afraid, no I won't be afraid. Just as long as you stand, stand by me.":
Hermia will be just fine as long as she does this with Lysander, because right now, he's her rock, because he's certain runnign away is the only thing and the right thing to do.

"If the sky that we look upon, should tumble and fall, and the mountains should crumble to the sea.... I won't cry, I won't cry, no I won't shed a tear, Just as long as you stand, stand by me.":
If anything happens, Hermia will be okay as long as Lysander is there, no matter how drastic.

This is a very romantic and sweet song, and Hermia would probably listen to it to be assured her and Lysander's love will get them through this.
We The Kings - Sad Song (Lyric Video) ft. Elena Coats

Track 4 - Sad Song by We The Kings

This song definitly represents Hermia's feelings about Lysander when he suddenly loves Helena. This would be a song she listened to and maybe even sung to Lysander to try to get him to change his mind. The song has a sad tone and is very dynamic, which is what Hermia is feelings. A lot of the lyrics express this well:

"You and I, We're like fireworks and symphonies exploding in the sky. With you, I'm alive
Like all the missing pieces of my heart, they finally collide."
: This is a good description and good simile for how Hermia feels toward Lysander. She ran away with him, yet now he loves Helena!

"Without you, I feel broke. Like I'm half of a whole. Without you, I've got no hand to hold. Without you, I feel torn. Like a sail in a storm. Without you, I'm just a sad song.... I'm just a sad song.": These are all similes for how, now that Lysander seems to love Helena, Hermia has a broken heart and wants him back.

"You're the perfect melody, The only harmony I wanna hear. You're my favorite part of me, With you standing next to me, I've got nothing to fear.": This shows how powerfully Hermia loves Lysander, especially how it's sung with so much feeling. Basically, Lysander's the only person she'd ever dream of loving.

Hermia probably would show this to Lysander to explain how she feels about him, because it shows how she feels with him, and without him. Obviously being with him is better.
Ludovico Einaudi - Nuvole Bianche [HD]

Track 5 - Nuvole Bianche By Ludovico Einaudi

This song shows how Hermia still feels hopeful towards Lysander. Even though he loves Helena know, he changed so suddenly, and he loved Hermia so much before. Hermia thinks there's still a chance for them. This song's tone is sad, but with that sadness, it's very hopeful. The song is very beautiful, and at some points seems very delicate, but it also feels very empowering. Also, the song can kind of be slow and defeated, but suddenly spring up and be fast and powerful. Even though there are no lyrics. This is the beauty of it. The music in itself seems to tell you this: Even with all the adversity there is (This is the sad part of the tone) and however many times you get knocked down (This is the delicacy, and slow, defeated parts.) you will overcome (This is the hopefulness) and can do anything. (This is the fast powerful parts, the empowerment, and it's beauty) This is what Hermia wants. To fell that all the obstacles will eventually melt away, Lysander will love her again, and they can get their happily ever after.
OneRepublic - Feel Again

Track 6 - Feel Again by OneRepublic

Hermia is very relieved when Lysander loves her again. Hermia paniced when he loved Hermia and this song shows her relief and joy when Lysander loves her again. The lyrics show this well.

"I reached out trying to love but I feel nothing.": This explains how when Hermia reached out to Lysander because she still loved him, he didn't respond.

"But with you.... I fell again....": Hermia and Lysander we're back together, and Hermia felt Lysander's love again.

The song keeps saying how "my heart was numb", "I was a lonely soul" and all that. This is a bit of an exaggeration, but Hermia would probably exaggerate. She loves Lysander that much! The song is very happy and upbeat, which is how Hermia feels.
New York, New York in the style of Frank Sinatra karaoke video with lyrics

Track 7 - New York, New York, written by Fred Ebb & John Kander, sung by Frank Sinatra, Instrumental

Although the lyrics don't work very well (please ignore them) the music is excellent. It is very upbeat, happy, and kind of carefree, which is how Hermia would feel after Theseus says it's okay for her to marry Lysander. She can probably already picture the wedding! The song has a happy carefree tone, which would probably be how Hermia feels, because she's escaped marring Demetrius without having to be a nun or having to be killed! She probably feels kind of carefree, because she just broke quite a lot of rules and was basically rewarded! And she no longer has to deal with her father!
The Lion King - Hakuna Matata (HD)

Track 8 -Hakuna Matata from the Lion King

This is a very happy and entertaining song. The play that Hermia and Lysander watch isn't very good. It is not very well put together and the character are always dropping character and ruining the effect. I can just picture Hermia pulling this listening to this song and paying no attention to the play. The song teaches you to have no worries and just go for it. When the characters stop singing and start talking, it's always very comical. This would distract Hermia from the play, and also tell her that she should have no worries and everything will be fine - just as soon as this terrible play ends. ;)
Rachel Platten - Fight Song Lyrics

Track 9 - Fight Song by Rachel Platten

I feel as if Hermia would listen to this with a smile on her face, as she moved on with Lysander. She imagine singing it to her father, and she might just do it, because she just broke a bunch of rules and was fine, so why not break just one more? The lyrics are perfect things to say to her father.

"Like how a single word can make a heart open": Those couple words egues said about how Hermia has to marry Demetrius caused her to run away.

"But I can make an explosion": Hermia isn't just someone who will go with the flow. She just may have a thing or two to say about what her dad wants to do with her.

"And all those things I didn't say, wrecking balls inside my brain! I will scream them loud tonight. Can you hear my voice this time?": Hermia has a lot of things she didn't have the courage to tell her father. But now she's married Lysander and is "his" so she can say what she wants to her father. She's also wondering if maybe this time, her father will hear what she has to say.

"This is my fight song, take back my life song, prove I'm alright song":
Hermia is taking her life back from her father, finally fighting him and saying "I'm not some piece of furniture you can do anything with. I'll be fine on my own. Good riddance."

"Starting right now I'll be strong, I'll play my fight song. And I don't really care if nobody else believes.... 'Cause I've still got a lot of fight left in me":
Hermia will be strong and not be controlled by anyone anymore. She doesn't care if Egeus comes for her, she'll still fight him.

This song starts out quite, then explodes into a loud dynamic song, telling everyone, "I'm just fine, I can stand on my own two feet, and no one can stop me!" This is how Hermia feels towards her father. She ran away with Lysander, and got to come back to Athens and marry him! So just maybe, she doesn't need a guy to own her and be strong for her. She is strong enough and can fight for herself.
Wagon Wheel (Acoustic Karaoke) Darius Rucker

Track 10 - Wagon Wheel by Darius Rucker, Instrumental.

This song is very happy and may describe Hermia's life after that midsummer night. It's joyful, makes you feel like everything turns out okay if you just ride out the storm. I can just picture photos of Hermia and Lysander getting married, raising a family, and growing old together flashing by with this song. The play seems to tell you everything will turn out okay and every one gets there happily ever after. Hermia definitely feels this way and this song shows it. The words may not fit, but the music does. Joy, carefree-ness, and a happily ever after is wriiten right in!
What A Wonderful World - Louis Armstrong - with Lyrics

Track 11 - What A Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong

This is a song Hermia would probably think of when she and Lysander were very elderly and thinking about the crazy way the ended up getting married. They would probably be very thankful that Theseus let them get married and be thinking what a wonderful world it is and what a wonderful life they have together. This song makes me thing it would be close to their deaths, when their children are all grown up and they are taking the last while they have on this world to think about all there happy moments. Maybe when Hermia was dying she'd think of how she loves Lysander and how they got married and think, "What a wonderful world,.... oh yeah..." with a smile.
