Registration opened on February 24th; in order to project staffing, we are requesting prospective kindergarten students register by April 1, 2020.
Age Requirement: All children who are residents of District 91 and have attained the age of five (5) on or before September 1, 2020 will be eligible to enroll in kindergarten, and corresponding to each subsequent grade level, unless previously approved for Early Entrance/Grade Acceleration (application period closed in late January).
Families are welcome to complete the registration process online; this will require that you submit all student information through Infinite Campus AND upload all requested documentation (at least one form requires notarization prior to the upload). Please note that in addition to the Infinite Campus process, you will have to provide the original birth certificate for inspection in person AND provide the original signature page in order to have your child’s registration marked complete.
Health documents are not required until Kindergarten Open House in August.
Kindergarten round-up will be offered March 19, 2020 at Milne Grove for parents to provide the original birth certificate and signature page OR for those families that need registration assistance.

We have many activities planned to help your child make a smooth transition: kindergarten preview morning in May, two park playdates in June and July, an ice cream social in early August, and an Open House right before school starts.
All families must provide current residency documentation every year.

Dear Parents & Caregivers,
Thank you for providing your valuable feedback during this year's 5 Essentials Survey window. We look forward to receiving the parent report later this year; it will help guide the work of our school improvement team.
Our 3rd grade students take federally required assessments every spring. The Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) measures English language arts and math skills among students in grades 3-8. Our testing window is March 12th through the 20th with make ups during the week of March 23rd. We ask parents of 3rd grade students to be particularly mindful about avoidable absences during this period of time. In early March, the 3rd grade team will send a letter home regarding specific IAR test dates. In total, there are 5 assessments (2 - 75 minute English Language Arts exams & 3 - 60 minute Math exams).
Nutrition and rest play a huge role in children's health and attention every single day, but students may need even more of each during this time of concentrated academic effort. Your cooperation and support is appreciated. The data gathered from these assessments play a huge role in how our district is measured against other schools. Our goal is to achieve the highest rank of "Exemplary" in the state system and demonstrate the wonderful things happening in our building.
Please contact me with any questions you may have at 815-838-0542x2104 or email jkoziol@d91.net.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Koziol
Winter Notes:
If your family is impacted by illness this winter, we would like to remind you to call the district attendance line to report absences by 9am. If you would like to request homework, you should do so in that message and indicate whether you will pick it up or wish for it to be sent home with another student.
Since it has been quite cold the past few weeks, I would like to remind caregivers that students line up and have recess outside as long as it is 20 degrees or over. We would like to see children wearing heavy coats, hats, and gloves each day in order to stay warm. If your child does not have winter gear, please contact our office and we will make sure warm gear is provided.
In case of emergency closings, there are lots of ways to get the information. The district will send out a call, email, and text. In addition, our website, WJOL, and the Emergency Closing Center will be updated.

Notes From the Nurse
The Flu ends with you
The flu season is in full swing in Illinois. The flu season starts every fall and runs through to the spring, typically halting during the month of May. The best time to get the flu vaccine is the early fall. If your child does not get the flu vaccine right away, it is still important to get it anytime. The flu virus infects people in the fall, winter, and well into the spring each year. Children can still be protected if they get a flu vaccine as late as March, April, or May.
The flu virus spreads easily through the air with coughing and sneezing, and through touching things like doorknobs or toys and then touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. Here are some tips that will protect you and your family from getting sick:
· Practice good hand hygiene. Students and staff should wash their hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Alcohol-based cleaners are also effective.
· Practice good respiratory etiquette. The main way that the flu spreads is from person to person in the droplets produced by coughs and sneezes, so it’s important to cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your elbow or shoulder, not into your hands.
· Stay home. If you’re sick stay home so that the flu virus is not shared with others.
Students, staff, and their families must take personal responsibility for helping to slow the spread of the virus by practicing these 3 simple steps. If your child is showing symptoms of the flu (fever, chills, headache, body aches, sore throat, cough, etc.) please keep them home to help prevent the spread of germs to others. When calling your child in to the attendance line, please give specific reasoning for the absence so we in the office can track illness trends.

Open Ended Questions
Looking for a way to keep the conversation going or to encourage higher level thinking skills? Try using open ended questions. Open ended questions are those which can be answered in many ways. Closed ended questions require a “yes”, a “no”, or single word response and often restrict conversation. Asking open ended questions provides parents with the opportunity to see what their child is thinking or feeling. Open ended questions encourage children to take risks, since there is no right or wrong answer, and enables children to analyze and explain their own thought process or actions. Try using some of the following questions the next time you have a conversation with your child.
Open Ended Questions
What do you think? What does it remind you of?
I wonder why…… How would you feel if…?
How are you going to do that? What would happen if ….?
What can you do the next time? What could you do to …..?
I wonder how you figured that out? What makes these go together?
What could you do instead? How are they alike, different?
Why do you think the character…? How did you know that?
Tell me about what you made. Tell me how you solved the problem.
Relationship Roundup with Mrs. Reynolds
This month’s topic: Family Game Night
How are your family dinners? Are you enjoying better communication with your child(ren)? Do you want to keep the family together after dinner, too?
Then it’s time to begin a Family Game Night!
Family game nights are a great way to spend time together. In my family we sometimes had a designated night, such as Friday Game Night. Other times we planned a game day after a holiday, such as the day after Thanksgiving. However you wish to do it, be intentional about planning time for playing games as a family.
Some of our family favorites are Qwerkle, Clue, Uno Attack, Scrabble Slam, Apples to Apples Junior, Say Anything, and a simple game of spoons. I spoke to some other parents and their favorite games are Sequence and Monopoly.
I love games for the face to face interaction we get, how we get to experience each other’s sense of humor, and for the memories we build. In fact, a parent told me just yesterday that she asked her children about their favorite family vacation. Her three kids are all teenagers. They have had some great vacations including a trip to Disney. (She thought Disney was a shoe in for their favorite, but she was very surprised by their answer!) All three teenagers remember their favorite vacation as a time they were in a small cabin with no TV and no WiFi. They loved that the family played board games! Don’t underestimate the great memories you build when playing games as a family. Even if your older children are teens and roll their eyes about playing a board game, on the inside they might be loving every minute of it!
In addition to the great conversations and laughs, there are many other benefits to playing games! Most board games build social and emotional skills, like sportsmanship, and many of them also build executive functioning skills. Executive functions are the processes in our brains that help us accomplish tasks. We use them when we plan our day, organize our materials, begin a chore, do an errand, focus on important information, use our time wisely, and work through a problem until we accomplish the goal.
Our children practice planning, time management and flexibility when they play with a timer in games such as Pictionary Kids. They have to plan what they will draw, manage their time as the timer goes down, and be flexible and change their strategy when others aren’t guessing correctly. If you play Jenga you are helping your kids build skills in self-control, flexibility, and planning while having a fun time. Planning and organization is required because to play Scrabble Slam as kids need to build off of each others’ words as the game progresses. Do you remember Simon Says? Paying attention is an important executive function that we practice when we play Simon Says and it doesn’t require a board game, a table, or even much time. We can play it almost anywhere.
Ask your fellow parents, “What are your family’s favorite games?”

Art
In March and April, all Milne Grove artists are continuing to explore the art of painting, while moving into the art of sculpture in the weeks ahead. Currently, we are also concentrating on communication skills when discussing completed artwork during critique. Students also continue to focus on communication in written form through “Artist Statements” for all projects completed. Be sure to ask your child about their artwork - you will be amazed at what you learn!
Currently, the kindergarten students are in the final stages of their Pop Art Wayne Thiebaud inspired sundae paintings and will progress into the art of printmaking. Students will use the “monoprint” technique to create a flower still life with chalk accents. First grade students will continue their outer space mixed media paintings and later turn their attention to the talented, yet mysterious world of Vincent Van Gogh prior to creating their own Sunflower Painting.
The second grade students will begin a watercolor cityscape inspired by Sweet Home Chicago. Students will view many skyline images for inspiration and learn about the countless sites and classic architecture within the great Windy City. The third grade artists are currently working on the color wheel and the work of Jim Dine. In the weeks ahead, we will be focusing on 3-D work with paper mache and clay.
For more information on art classes at Milne Grove, please be sure to check us out on the web at www.d91.net. Thank you for your interest in your child’s art education.
