The Lord of the Flies
By Jake Barton
The Evil in Man's Heart
The lord of the flies represents the evil in mans heart. It also represents the savagery of man and the desire to have something ruling over the. Also it may represent fear, because they fear the beast and offer the pigs head to it.
Quote 1
"He says he saw the beastie, the snake- thing, and will it come back tonight?"(Golding 36) The first time that they mention the beast. It isn't apparent at the time but this will cause their downfall and mass paranoia.
Quote 2
"However Simon thought of the beast, there rose before his inward sight the picture of a human once heroic and sick.(Golding 103)" this is one of the times when Simon showed that he never really believed in the beast. he believed that the beast was the fear in mans heart.
Quote 3
"Fancy thinking the beast was something you could hunt and kill!(Golding 143)" The head is talking about that the beast is not so much a physical thing. But mostly a blackness in their hearts.
