The Hoot Owl

MAY 2019

THINGS TO KNOW:

*MAY is upon us! Can you believe how quickly this year has gone. Whether you dropped off your PK student or your fourth grader, day one is always difficult. Fast forward to May where you easily drive through the car rider line and drop them off or patiently wait for the bus and smile as you watch them load and ride away. The growth in your children from Day One to the end always amazes me. They transition through the year and become a "?? grader." (Fill in with your child's next grade.) From not being able to write their names to reading chapter books, we hope to grow your child's love of reading, but more importantly their love for learning! Thank you for partnering with us to grow lifelong learners!

*SECOND GRADE PROGRAM - Is on Thursday, May 2 at 6:30 for parents. We look forward to this dinosaur themed variety show.

*TEACHER/NURSE APPRECIATION WEEK - Teacher and Nurse Appreciation Week is May 6 - 10. Please help us thank your child's teacher this week. PTO sent home a suggestion of daily ideas.

*MUFFINS WITH MOM - Is Friday, May 10 from 7:00 - 7:45 a.m. Students are invited to bring Mom or one special adult with them to Muffins with Mom.

*CLOSED CAMPUS - We will have a closed campus on Monday, May 13 - Wednesday, May 15. With STAAR testing and make up testing, we request that parents refrain from coming to lunch these three days. Parents will be allowed in on Thursday, May 16.

*STAAR MATH AND READING - Third and fourth grade students will be participating in STAAR Math and Reading on May 13 & 14 with make up testing on May 15. Third and fourth grade parents, please help us by ensuring your child is well rested, fed a good breakfast and present at school on both of these days.

*WAR EAGLE CHALLENGE - Fourth grade students will be participating in the War Eagle Challenge at ORHS on Tuesday, May 21.

*FUN DAY - Fun Day is scheduled for Friday, May 24. Watch for more details to come as PTO will be asking for many volunteers to help make this day a success for our students!

*MEMORIAL DAY HOLIDAY - Reminder that Monday, May 27 is a school holiday.

*KINDERGARTEN GRADUATION - Will be held on May 28 @ 9:00 a.m. We will start the ceremony promptly at 9:00 so please make plans to arrive early as there is typically a line for check in.

*FOURTH GRADE GRADUATION - Is May 29 @ 9:00 a.m. We will start the ceremony promptly at 9:00 so please make plans to arrive early as there is typically a line for check in.

*LAST DAY/EARLY RELEASE - May 30 is the last day of school. Students will be dismissed at 12:10 p.m. Please make sure to make afternoon plans for them.

OUTDOOR CLASSROOM

With the loss of our beloved Keith Wardrup, amazing teacher and gardener, we are in the process of raising funds to build an outdoor classroom in his memory. If you know of a business or other organization that might be interested in making a donation, please send the contact information to Tami Eldridge @ teldridge@conroeisd.net.

Fundraising will take place shortly but we are still working on the details.

PTO INFORMATION

*Reminder that next week is Teacher Appreciation Week.

*Fun Day is approaching. Watch your email for a volunteer sign up sheet. We will need many volunteers throughout the day!

*Next meeting is May 9 @ 9:30 a.m.

*Board Member voting will be sent out Friday. Please take 2 minutes to vote for the Board next year.

SUMMER READING INFORMATION

We encourage our students to continue reading throughout the summer so that the skills they have obtained stay strong. Our librarian helps with this by offering a Popcorn party for those students who participate in summer reading. Students are asked to read a total of 600 minutes over the summer. All they have to do is read, complete the form and bring it back with them the first week of school. The link to the form is below.

Oak Ridge Feedback Form

Below is a link requesting parent feedback. This will be a permanent part of our monthly newsletter so that at anytime, you can provide feedback and/or ask questions. We will respond to the sender, if name is given, within 48 hours. Please take time to share your thoughts about our school and staff with us.

NURSE'S NOTES

Dear Parents,

It is that time of year again. Medications that were checked in to the clinic need to be picked up by 3:30 p.m. on Thursday May 30th. Any medication not picked up by May 30th will have to be discarded.

We hope that you had a great year! Have a safe and fun filled summer!

CAR RIDER LINE - REMINDER OF THE PROCESS

MORNING NOTES - If you are choosing to park and drop off your children, it is important that you park in a parking spot and walk your child to the door. Avoid parking behind someone, thus blocking them in, or parking in the entrance/exit to the parking lot. We do recommend that you drive through the line to drop off instead of parking and walking the child to the front. Tardies begin at 8:02 a.m. Please arrive early to ensure your child is not tardy to school.

AFTERNOON NOTES - Remember that you must enter the car rider line from Oak Ridge School Road instead of our driveway.

REMINDER - Don't forget when you are in the car rider line, it is against the law to be on your cell phone. (Not to mention that it is dangerous to our staff and students who are on duty.)

BREAKFAST/LUNCH

Our school alone has over $1500 in charges for either breakfast or lunch. We are working diligently to get those debts paid in full. You will receive an email from myself and a text message from the district when you owe money. Quickly taking care of this debt will be greatly appreciated.

If you need assistance with breakfast or lunch, free/reduced applications can be located at the link below. Mrs. Vera, our registrar, can assist you in completing this form should you need assistance.
