The Compass Rose: 11/10
Principal's Message
To the East Elementary School community:
Throughout this fall, East Elementary educators and administrators have been diving into the concept of Universal Design for Learning. Team members here have been learning about UDL principles, examining practices, and exploring ways in which we can apply tenets of UDL in our instruction.
The guiding principles of UDL seek to establish options and access for students by removing barriers and designing tasks that have multiple ways for students to show what they know- providing options with intentionality to support the why, what, and how of learning. One example of this is choice-boards. Students may be presented with a choice board in Mathematics that asks them to complete 4 of the 12 options during a period. These options go beyond typical pen-to-paper application and may ask students to compute, compare, write, discuss, draw, construct, or other ways to connect their knowledge to a concept or learning goal.
An in-depth summary of some of these options can be found here: https://udlguidelines.cast.org/, or you can view the video linked below.

Staying Healthy
On November 1, 2022, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) and the Massachusetts Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics published steps for families to take to help prevent respiratory illness this season:
- Vaccinate children ages 6 months and older against influenza as soon as possible.
- Vaccinate children ages 6 months and older against COVID-19, including updated booster shots for children 5 and older who had their primary series more than 2 months ago.
- Remember that people can get a COVID-19 vaccine and flu shot at the same time.
- Stay on schedule for monthly treatments for infants who have been offered treatment with protective antibodies due to their prematurity or another condition.
- Practice hand hygiene and cover coughs and sneezes.
- Clean high touch surfaces at home frequently with household disinfectants.
