A Message from the Principal
Although our newsletter will look completely different until we are back in session, we will continue to send it out, and I will continue to add my brief message, as I think it is important that we stay connected as a community in as many ways as possible. So…
Hello Glen Grove Families,
Glen Grove, along with all of the D34 schools, kicked off its E-Learning this week. I must say, that despite the humorous memes, cartoons and posts from frustrated parents trying to manage this new way of learning, although not perfect, our virtual learning experiences were off to a strong start. Having said that, I do not underestimate the challenges that come with overseeing this endeavor – one of the memes may have actually come from my own daughter, mother of a toddler, a 2nd and a 7th grader (!) - and we thank you - so very much - for your support. Please know that you can reach out to your child’s teacher and to me with questions and feedback, as we are also learning as we go, revising, and looking to improve with each step of the way.
Next week is spring break – a very different spring break than the one I’m sure we’d all envisioned. Although our students will not be engaged in structured E-Learning activities, we do encourage them to keep their young minds active and alert next week. Here are two ideas for doing just that:
- Reading for at least 20-minutes a day. We also encourage our students to share their reading by completing Mrs. Funke’s reading form at the end of each day. We’d love to see how many minutes our Glen Grove community reads collectively, and I can’t wait to announce that number to the kids - I’m sure it will be in the hundreds of thousands!
- Taking a family walk through your neighborhood. Although social distancing should be our norm, experts are recommending that as long as you are not in a crowd and keep at least six between yourselves and others, taking a walk or run outdoors is a great way to keep up both mental and physical health. As a way of making your family walks a bit more engaging AND identifying creative ways of staying connected, we offer you the option of participating in our POSTER/SPIRIT WEEK activities. Open this LINK for details and directions.
Although not an option before, during this period, students can access YouTube on their school iPads, as teachers may be using it to assign educational videos or to communicate with kids through a video such as the one I sent to your children yesterday. Please know that District restrictions are still in place as are the web filters that will block inappropriate searches and notify us of inappropriate or unsafe searches that have been attempted. One of the repercussions of our current reality, is, I’m afraid, even more screen time for our children, so now more than ever, please continue to encourage your child to use his/her iPad responsibly and safely. I sent the students their own email about this earlier today, so feel free to access that, too, as you talk this over with your children.
Please know that I speak for all of us at Glen Grove when I say that we really missed your children this week and hope we will be back together, as planned, on Tuesday, March 31st. These are, however, uncertain times, so do continue to look for updates from our District.
Typically, in my March message, I would end with wishes for you to have a safe and joy-filled break. Although circumstances around this year’s spring break are unprecedented, my wishes to you are not. I continue to wish you safety, health, and moments of joy in the days and weeks ahead, but now I must also add, as we all navigate these uncharted territories together.
With warmest regards,
