Note From the Principal
Our White River Family wishes you a wonderful winter break. Every day of learning brings us joy and underscores what matters most -our students. Heartfelt thanks to you and your family.
Monday, January 4th students will participate in an eLearning school day. This means students will be learning from home completing activities assigned by their teachers. Classroom teachers will be sending directions home with students or will post the information on-line via email, Seesaw, or Canvas by 9AM.
We look forward to welcoming you back to in-person learning on Tuesday, January 5th. Enjoy your break in good health, and all the best in 2021!
Soaring with you,
Ms. VanDermark

Online Learners
Hi everyone!
Our online teaching and learning team want to wish you all a happy holiday season and hope that you have time to rest and relax over the next two weeks. I know this time of year will be different than normal. Our family is trying to decide how we will connect and remain safe and physically distant. I am reminded at this time of year, that even though we are in a pandemic, that we are still connected and that is what is important. We may not be able to visit others like we typically do yet we can talk via facetime, zoom, video messenger and so much more. Here’s a fun video: https://bit.ly/3rdkzuT from “Kid Superintendent” who has wise words for us all to listen to. Enjoy!
An Important Note about “Assignments”
When we think about the work kids do in school, we are all used to being assigned work to turn in. Oftentimes that ends up equating to thinking about “compliance” - did you get your homework done? Did you turn your work in? Did you finish that tonight? When we talk about compliance only, it is hard to understand the meaning behind the assignment or task that was given to a child. As teachers, our biggest reason for for giving assignments and/or tasks to be complete is to get to know your child and to learn more about them and how to help them in their learning journey. Therefore, consider some slight changes in how this conversation may happen at home. For instance, you might say, “I know that Mrs. Smith really wants to know what you know. Were you able to show her that today? What did you do to share your learning with her?” This puts the responsibility in the child’s hands to think about their learning and what they did. It may also sound like, “So, Mrs. Smith called today and mentioned that she really wants to know more about you yet she is struggling to do so because the tasks that teach her those things haven’t been submitted. What do you think Mrs. Smith is trying to learn about you? How can we show her what you know? Let’s make a plan.” This may take a little more time yet becomes less about did you get your work done and more about the why behind getting the work done. Also- because it is a change in language or the way we talk about school, it may take a while to see the fruition of the change so be patient and always come back to the why behind the learning task.

Student Services Team
White River and all Noblesville Elementary Schools are partnering this year with Health Ed Pros to bring Here We Grow! to our 4th grade students and The Facts of Life to our 5th grade students. Below is more information on these programs. All instruction is developmentally appropriate and aligns with the National and State Academic Standards for Health and Wellness.
Here We Grow! 4th Grade Program: A human growth and development program which targets 4th grade students and their journey through puberty. Classes are separated by gender to allow students the opportunity to ask questions more comfortably. The primary focus of this program centers around heredity, hormones, and hygiene, along with a brief overview of the male and female reproductive systems.
The Facts of Life a 5th Grade Program: A human growth and development program which targets fifth grade students and their journey through puberty. Classes are separated by gender to allow students the opportunity to ask questions more comfortably. The program includes an overview of the male and female reproductive systems, review of all body systems, the process of human reproduction from fertilization to birth, and how their body grows and changes during puberty.
