Accelerated Reader & Literary Guild 2017-18
We are excited to announce a couple of new initiatives to partner with our Accelerated Reader program. Please read the letter below for more information regarding these new initiatives and click the link below to find out more about how the Accelerated Reader (AR) and Literary Guild (LG) programs work here at Evansdale.
Dear Parents/Guardians,
In an effort to promote stellar reading, excellent attendance, and commendable character, Evansdale Elementary is adding a couple of initiatives to go along with our Accelerated Reader (AR) program. Please see attached information regarding Accelerated Reader and Literary Guild. *Please note that AR is only for 1st-5th grade students and that Literary Guild is an optional program. Additionally, Literary Guild is run by parent volunteers and the updates occur when time permits. Teachers will be working with the students on their AR goals to ensure that students are working towards their individual goals. Goals will be set in 5 point increments for students. The new student recognition areas are attendance and outstanding character traits.
Criteria for Perfect Attendance
· Perfect attendance for the month
Criteria for Character trait of the month (see bottom of page)
· Students are informed of the character trait of the month at the start of the each month by the guidance department (Ms. Alexander and Mr. Oseni). Students will also be reminded of the character trait throughout the month by their teachers.
Each month, students will attend an assembly which will recognize students exhibiting AR achievement (1st-5th grade only) based on individual goals, students with perfect attendance for the month, and students who are displaying behaviors that represent the character trait of the month. The assemblies will be held each month (September recognition will be held on Monday, October 10th, etc.). These initiatives will start with the month of September.
We have spoken with the students and they are aware of these initiatives. We’re looking forward to recognizing many of our Eagles throughout the school year!
Sincerely,
Dr. Chattman
Principal

Two Special Planetarium Programs on September 15th
Carancas: Fireball from Space is presented at 7 pm. On September 15th, 2007, an asteroid the size of a washing machine smashed into the ground on the high plains of Peru. The impact made a crater 60 feet in diameter. Fernbank’s Dr. Scott Harris was among the scientists who first investigated the crater. Join Dr. Harris as he discusses the history of impacts on our planet, and the risks of a cosmic collision that we face every day.
Next, at 8pm, we present Requiem for Cassini. On September 15th, NASA engineers at the Jet Propulsion Laboratories will direct the Cassini spacecraft to crash into the atmosphere of Saturn, ending its 13 years of exploration of Saturn, its rings, and its moons. This program will be a survey of all the amazing (and beautiful) discoveries Cassini helped us make. Using our new 4K laser digital projectors and visualization software, Dr. Scott Harris will lead you on a journey from the ice volcanoes of Enceladus to the methane lakes of Titan.
Both events take place in the Jim Cherry Memorial Planetarium, and regular admission charges apply.
