What is RTI and Why is it so Important to Early Learning? ... Simply put, Response to Intervention (RTI) is a framework for implementing proactive data-driven decision making. It provides teachers with better, more timely information about students in order to improve student learning and performance.
Response to Intervention (RTI) is a multi-tier approach to the early identification and support of students with learning and behavior needs. The RTI process begins with high-quality instruction and universal screening of all children in the general education classroom.
Target Audience for this Training: Administrators, supervisors, counselors, psychologists, special and general education teachers.
~Most schools find it helpful to send teams made up of administrators, special education and general education teachers.
~Teams should bring real case studies with them including data about the severity of the students' problems, i.e., oral reading fluency scores, digits per minute counts, numbers of disruptions per class period, frequency of missing assignments...

*How to diagnose the root cause?
*Practice using case studies in reading, math and attention problems

Days Three & Four: Advanced Coaching Practice (8:30 am - 4:00 pm)
*Analyzing and addressing behavior, focusing, organization and memory problems
*Using case studies to practice identifying root causes and setting DATA goals

- Analyze why students are having academic or behavior problems.
- Practice a strategy for digging below symptoms to find the root causes of student problems.
- Learn to write clear goals for improving student progress.
- Develop simple ways of collecting data that will guide each step of the process (progress monitoring).
- Build a partnership with the student and his/her family so all key players take responsibility.
- Explore ways of developing a data base of powerful academic and behavioral interventions.
Faculty Member Overview: Margaret Searle
Margaret Searle is the founder of Searle Enterprises, a consultant group working in the areas of collaboration, problem-solving, and innovative teaching techniques. She regularly presents at conferences nationally and works with individual school districts to develop and implement continuous improvement plans.
She has taught in all grades from kindergarten through 8th grade. Her background also includes serving as a Title I director, a middle school principal, an elementary principal, and a K-12 supervisor. She served as president of the Ohio Association of Elementary School Administrators and was as an education advisor to President George H. W. Bush.
Searle is the author of the Ohio Department of Education's Standards-Based Instruction for All Learners: A Treasure Chest for Principal-led Building Teams (2004), a how-to book on differentiation, inclusion, and collaborative problem-solving. Her second book, What To Do When You Don't Know What To Do: Building a Pyramid of Interventions (2007), describes a step-by-step method for diagnosing causes of troublesome issues and provides guidelines for actively involving parents and students in problem-solving.
Her third book, Response to Intervention: What Every School Leader Needs To Know About RTI (2010) and the companion DVD on secondary school RTI interventions are practical guides for teachers and administrators who want to build a culture of data-driven decision making supported by research-based interventions.
- Causes and Cures in the Classroom: Getting to the Root of Academic and Behavior Problems (2013) reveals new neurological research about how underdeveloped executive function skills can cause poor behavior and achievement and gives specific strategies for addressing these problems.
Searle's most recent book, Teacher Teamwork: How Do We Make It Work? shows how to build productive teams and intentionally create an environment of professional engagement in your school.

What time should I arrive at the training site? Please arrive 15 minutes early to complete the check-in process.
What You Should Bring? Participants should bring a charged laptop in order to gain valuable hands-on experience with the websites.
Our Cancellation Policy - Due to the costs associated with this event, cancellations must be received by Kim Leach at Kleach@mresc.org by May 15, 2019 at 3:00 pm. Cancellations received outside of this policy will not be accepted. Attendees and/or employing districts will be billed accordingly.
