Give the GIFT!
Frequently Asked Questions
A. What is The Gift about?
The Gift seeks to empower children and youth from lower income families with music training and language skills. We believe that this will go a long way in reducing juvenile delinquency and improving equity in education due to limited resources. Together with our other programs (Virtual Homework Help and Bread Distribution Program), we want to support and inspire families so that they can focus on building strong families, chasing their dreams, and helping others in our midst. More information is available at https://www.evnsg.org/program
B. Who can volunteer with The Gift, VHT or BDP? What is the commitment like?
All Singaporeans and Permanent Residents above the age of 18 are welcome. For volunteers who would like to teach, they should be proficient/fluent in the target language/instrument, e.g. grade 5 and above in ABRSM or equivalent.
Commitment for the Gift (face-to-face) and VHT (online) is once weekly, while that for BDP is once or twice weekly to households living within a 15-30 min radius.
C. What instruments or languages can volunteers teach?
Volunteers can teach the piano/music theory or second and third languages such as Chinese, Malay, Tamil, Japanese, Korean, French, German, etc. Materials will be provided. If you would like to teach another musical instrument such as guitar, violin, etc., do let us know as we would need to source for the instruments. We also accept donations of pre-owned instruments that are looking for a new lease of life with us.
D. Where and when will classes be held?
Due to safe distancing measures, volunteers will teach one student at each time. Classes will be held at People’s Association (Tampines) on Tuesdays and Fridays at 4 pm, Woodlands & Jurong on Thursdays at 6 pm and Morningstar Community Services (Bedok and Sengkang) on Mondays at 7 pm. If you can't make it on these three days, indicate an alternate time slot in the online form. Sessions would be 1 hour long and the commitment would be once weekly sessions. Volunteers who are unable to come in person can do so virtually through Zoom or Skype. Do register early to be informed as there may be changes to class timings due to logistical considerations.
E. Are volunteers paid?
Volunteers will be reimbursed for transport costs where necessary.
F. Who are the needy families?
Needy families are families who fit the MSF criteria of having an income of below $1000 per capita.
