NES MOUNTAIN MEMO
September 13, 2019
From Principal Reckert
Dear Nederland Elementary Families,
Fall is definitely in the air and we are in the full swing of school! Please be sure that you’re looking at our school calendar below - there are many events in the upcoming weeks to mark on your home schedules from Field Day to School Photo Day and much more. It’s an exciting time at NES!
Please be sure that your child’s emergency contacts are up-to-date in Infinite Campus. It’s important that we have two or three additional people we can call if we cannot get in touch with your child’s primary caregivers. With canyon construction and spotty cell reception, it’s often difficult for us to get in touch with adults in your child’s life in the event they need to go home sick or are unsure of after school plans. Please contact Sheila in the main office if you need assistance in updating the emergency contacts.
Have a great weekend,
Laurel

Who's Who on the NES Staff?
Susan Blurton, Art Teacher
Hello, my name is Susan Blurton and I’m very excited to be your child’s art teacher this year at Nederland Elementary! This is my 15th year as an elementary and middle school Visual Arts teacher. I love Colorado and that’s why I moved here from Ohio, where in addition to teaching art, I was an adjunct professor and costume designer for the theater department at Kent State University. I have one daughter who lives in California. One of my favorite artist quotes is, “I never met a color I didn’t like!” by Dale Chilhuly. That quote matches my personality! When I’m not teaching I like to make my own art, hike, go to concerts, paddle down rivers, and eat sushi!
Art is everywhere!!! It’s a joy to teach young students the elements and principles of design through many creative experiences. I’m looking forward to an exciting year of inspiring creative, artistic works with my students. Feel free to stop in and see what’s happening in the art room!
Susan Jones, Art Teacher
A little about me and my family: I have 2 wonderful children, Dennon and Ali. They went from Kindergarten through graduation in Nederland, and now they both might become teachers as well. I also have a fabulous husband that loves and appreciates Nederland as well (especially the Music program). I love Music and children and am so grateful to be a part of the NES family.
My Favorite Color: Rainbow!
My Favorite Food: A tie between chocolate and salt and vinegar chips.
Simone Smead, PE Teacher
Hello! An interesting fact about me is that I lived 25 years in the Marshall Islands, 6 feet above sea level, and now I teach in Ned at 8,500 feet elevation. Quite a change!
I am passionate about helping kids develop physical skills, sportsmanship, and a love for moving their bodies and playing with others. This is my 2nd year teaching physical education at NES but my 5th year in the wonderful Ned community. I taught PE, Health, Business, Economics, and coached varsity girls basketball NMSHS for three years. I also taught four years of elementary PE for other BVSD schools.
Outside of school, I like to stay active spending time with my family, skiing, biking, traveling, and anything else we can think of for fun!

Pinwheels for Peace!
Join us if you are able for Pinwheels for Peace on Thursday, September 26 at 2:40 on the NES playground. Ms. B. has helped the students make pinwheels and peace signs and Ms. Susan has been teaching the students songs about peace. We will all gather to sing our songs and let our wishes for peace on pinwheels fly out into the world.
Child Assault Prevention
During the next few weeks, Nederland Elementary School will be participating in the Child Assault Prevention (CAP) Program. As parents concerned about the safety of your children, we hope you will participate in this program by attending this adult training. Parent participation is crucial for program success.
CAP’s mission is to prevent child assault by teaching children to recognize and deal with potentially unsafe situations (bullying, stranger abduction, & sexual assault). CAP also prepares adults who are a part of the child’s community (teachers and parents) to help children in this journey.
The success of the CAP program depends on the support of the school community. We encourage children to share their experiences and concerns with adults. It is so important that parents and school personnel be willing and able to respond to these concerns appropriately.
We invite you to attend the CAP Parent Training on September 19, 2019 from 5:30-7:30pm at Nederland Elementary School. Please make every effort to attend. This meeting is for adults only.
This presentation will be a comprehensive discussion of the following topics:
An overview of sexual assault issues & dynamics including:
Definitions and prevalence of sexual assault
Vulnerability, Blame, Denial
Myths & Facts of Victims & Perpetrators
Safety Tips and Tools regarding issues of Bullying, Stranger Awareness, Sexual Assault
Warning signs of possible victimization
Why children are vulnerable to assault & how to empower them
CAP’s successful prevention model to decrease children’s vulnerability to assault
A demonstration of the children’s classroom presentations
Question & Answer & Review of take-home materials for parents
In the days following this presentation, we will be conducting CAP classroom workshops at Nederland Elementary for Kindergarten -5th-grade students. Please attend this parent training so we can all help our children be Safe, Strong and Free! For additional information regarding the CAP program please visit their website at www.FrontRangeCAP.org .

Social Emotional Learning at NES
Social Emotional Learning at NES (Sept 9-13, 2019)
Kids have the hardest time paying attention. Research has shown that adults are even losing their ability to focus in this digital age of multi-screen usage. Our attention spans are going down as we jump from thought to thought, from distraction to distraction. So students practiced focusing all 5 of our senses on one thing at a time. By slowing down and concentrating on the information our senses give us, we were able to connect our wizard brain to our lizard brain. We were able to relax and focus. Ask your child about the 5,4,3,2,1 mindfulness exercise we did outside. With enough daily mindfulness practice, we can all increase our attention span.
And every day, the world will drag you by the hand, yelling, "This is important! And this is important! You need to worry about this! And this! And each day, it's up to you to yank your hand back, put it on your heart and say, "No. This is what is important."
