Eyeglasses
Wyatt VanDusen
Inventor
There is no determined inventor of the eyeglasses, but they were said to be created in Pisa, located in Northern Italy, around 1290.
Bringing the Eyeglasses to Life
The man who had actually brought the eyeglasses invention to life was named Alessandro Della Spina, who had followed a text found in the "Ancient Chronicle of the Dominican Monastery of St. Catherine in Pisa" which practically said that the one who had created the glasses first had not been willing to share them, therefore he (Spina) had made them and created them and shared them with all.
Originating Year
The first original creation in Pisa by the unknown source was around 1290, but when Spina had taken eyeglasses to share with all into his own hands, it was around 1313.
Eyeglasses and the Renaissance / Changes Through Time
During the Renaissance, eyeglasses were also known as "spectacles," and were only worn by the rich and nobles, who were usually of well-read Italian clergy. They were generally trying to be made of glass lenses, but that was made illegal in this time period and began to be made with the more valuable source, rock crystal. Eventually, after time, the printing press was invented, which meant that more books were being created, which led to the common people obtaining eyeglasses. During this period, they began making glasses more fashionable, where frames would be made of metals and woods, as well as leather and sometimes horns or bones. Finally, in the mid-1400s, high-grade lenses were invented for the eyeglass invention. Its purpose had gone from helping the rich and the nobles to helping all those who were in need of eyeglasses.
