Fabulous First Grade
Getting ready for 2nd grade!!!
Language Workshop
In Language Workshop, students finished the unit "What can we learn from stories?" We enjoyed discussing the many lessons we could learn from the great books we read. Our next unit is "How does my curiosity influence my inquiry?" In this unit students will learn what to do when they are curious about something and how to put that curiosity into action.
Reading Workshop
In Reading Workshop students have been working on story maps. We have been working to identify the characters, setting, problem, solution and lesson in stories we read together and stories read in our reading groups.
Writer's Workshop
In Writer's Workshop, first graders are writing fictional narrative stories. We are using story map skills to create a plan for each piece we write. We reviewed our Language Workshop books to help us brainstorm ideas for the characters, setting, problem and solution.. Please ask your student about the stories they are writing about!
Math Workshop
This week in math, we continued our unit on measurement. We are focusing on telling time for the next two weeks. Students are working on telling time to the hour and half hour which is our first grade standard. Students are also working on MAP goals. Students are grouped to work on goals they need to reach before our end of the year MAP testing.
Science
Last week, students finished learning about sound and are now focusing on light. We also started learning about Earth Day and how we can help take care of our earth. Students learned about the dangers of plastics in our environment and the importance of recycling. All this is in preparation for our Makerspace Challenge coming up next week. Please be sure your son or daughter sent a water bottle to school with their name on it by next week.
Earth Day Makerspace Challenge
First graders will be participating in an Earth Day Makerspace Challenge next week.
As always, thank you for your support and providing materials for our students to use in the makerspace!
Tinker Bell Field Trip
We will be taking our field trip to see Tinker Bell on Wednesday, May 1st. At this time, all volunteers have been contacted. Students will need a bag lunch on this day as we will be eating lunch in the classroom prior to leaving for the field trip. Please let your student's teacher know if you have any questions!
