The Suburban: My Christmas Wish for You by Shelley Leiser
After talking with my sister and others, I've decided one thing I want to do for my children, and I hope to pass on to others, is not to focus on material presents during Christmas; instead, focus on gifting your children with experiences. Take them skiing in elf outfits, view (judge) Christmas lights in a different neighborhood, watch White Christmas while drinking hot cocoa and stringing popcorn for the tree, carol for your neighbors, bake cookies for the lady down the street, or go buy presents for a child on the giving tree at the gym or your place of worship.
Thinking of all the fun, goofy things I can experience with my kids makes me happy. I know we have a lot of Hallmark movie lovers out there, so this is my challenge to you: Watch a Hallmark Christmas movie, and have the experience with your kids that the people in those movies have. Make this Christmas a true "Hallmark moment!"

Back in the Day
The good news is that we did have an excellent suggestion for a future Back in the Day segment from Krissy Leinen. The bad news is that nobody had any offerings from their past to contribute to our collection of nostalgia and history.
Well, I am nothing if not a problem solver. I know, you all are saying, "Boy, if I had a nickel for every time I said that about Dan, I would have a couple of nickels". So, I compiled a personal collection of back in the day memorabilia, put it on a video and laid it out there for all to see, hope you have fun with this.

Boy's Basketball
The Gilbert Boys' High School Basketball program has 45 players out in grades 9-12. We have 7 seniors and return 4 starters from a season ago (Dax Hatfield, Wes Greder, Ryan Blum, and Jack Hoiberg). Our first game is tonight against North Polk.
We expect to play an uptempo style of basketball because we are a very fast team. We had a very good scoring team last year and hope to improve on the 13-10 varsity mark. Our team has shown a really good work ethic in practices so far and we believe that this will translate into success this upcoming season. Our team is working to improve on the defensive end and in our rebounding. I think we can improve in these areas and it should make our team very competitive in the Heart of Iowa Conference.
Addition to Coach Terrones' pre-season comments
The boy's basketball team is now 5-0, plays Nevada (4-1) on Friday and hosts West Marshall on January 3rd after break.
Girl's Basketball
The girls basketball season is off to a great start. The team is 5-2 and seems to be improving every game. Seniors on the team are Madsion Blum, Kelly Anderson, Jane Brown, Elise Powers, Paige Hoiberg, and Livy Tibben.
It is not easy to have a new coach your senior year but these girls have had an amazing attitude. They've worked exceptionally hard, and been very open to new ways of doing things.
The last game before break is Friday vs. Nevada, then the season resumes January 3rd with a home game against West Marshall.

New Year's Resolutions
Generally speaking, we then tumble into a slightly remorseful evaluation of our lives, eating habits and our general appearance. This occurs sometime between Christmas and New Year's. Out with the old and in with the new, we hit the ground running, implementing our resolutions, usually having to do with weight loss and change of eating habits. We flip the calendar to January 1st fully committed to a year long revitalization and improvement of ourselves. Then, January 2nd hits, reality sets in, kids, jobs, busy schedules and day to day life get in the way of those resolutions. It becomes more and more difficult to work on those resolutions and they quickly fade into the background of our lives
Just a few thoughts on this. First, the old that we want to change probably wasn't that bad. Each year, age takes its toll, responsibilities at work, with family and all kinds of other things fill up the calendar, it's not long until the one person being neglected is yourself. So quit being so hard on yourself. Pick out one or two small things to begin with and build on that. All change starts out as something small and builds to something big. Those resolutions, the small things will turn into a personal revolution. The big change people see at the end of the year started out with a few small resolutions. And hey, if you fall short of your goals, big deal. Set some new goals and start over, the point is you stay at it. Enjoy the holidays, embrace the new year and take it one day and one small goal at a time.
