Reflection Corner

“Your younger brother came, and your father killed the fatted calf because he has him back in good health. The older son was angry and would not go in, so his father came out and begged him.” – Luke 15.27-28

For the younger, prodigal son in Sunday’s gospel, the pig trough turns out to be a holy place. He is entirely wrong about which relationships in his life are most sustaining. He gathers fair weather, party people around him. Only when he bottoms out at the pig trough does he change his mind and heart about what he wants. His self-centered lifestyle has starved him into recognizing he needs a sustaining relationship. The younger son goes home to ask forgiveness.

One lost son is found but the older son is lost in resentment? He wants to see his brother punished. The merciful father who has welcomed one son home has to seek out and beg the older son to come to the party? Will he come? The parable does tell us.

When have you been the repentant, prodigal son?

When have you been the forgiving father?

When have you been the resentful son?

Lord God, I am thankful that I may come before you, confused, even puzzled at times at my failures and weakness. I know that if I seek forgiveness from my heart, I shall find it. You have assured me that even the angels in heaven rejoice over one sinner turning back to the Lord of love and forgiveness.

Hear my prayer, Lord, look not at my failures, but at my heart that desires to be one with your grace and call. Amen.

From PTO President, Mary Ann Chongco on International Dinner, now Global Community Potluck

Hello OLM Families,

The success of our PTO events, fundraisers and activities come from the continuous support and participation of our families here at Our Lady of Mercy. Without this support, we are unable to follow through with plans made.

We had exciting plans for the International Dinner this year, but due to low ticket sales, volunteers and food donations we will need to change the International Dinner event to a Global Community Potluck instead. This event will now be an informal get together at the Church Hall for anyone wanting to bring a dish and meet and mingle with other families in a relaxed setting.

No tickets needed. Please bring something to share - enough for your family + 6 others. PTO will provide the venue, plates, utensils, napkins and drinks. Saturday 4/6 @ Church Hall from 6 - 9 pm.

Requests for tickets already submitted will be refunded.

If you would still like to help volunteer for set up and clean up please let us know. (Points will still be awarded.)

If you are in need of food or service points after this event, we ask you to please raise your hand and support the upcoming carnival happening in May.

Thanks for your understanding and hope to see you at our Global Community Potluck - Saturday 4/6 from 6 - 9 pm @ The Church Hall. Join us for a wonderful evening of FOOD, FUN & FAMILY!

Thank you,

Mary Ann B. Chongco

Altar Server Training

The Our Lady of Mercy Church AS Ministry would like to extend our invitation to all 3rd to 8th Grade students of the OLM School and the Religious Ed to join us in serving God and the Church as altar servers.

Serving the altar is a privileged way of becoming closer to Jesus. Pope Francis addressed the youth and said, “You can be apostles, capable of drawing others to Jesus. This will happen if you are full of enthusiasm for him. Know and love the Lord Jesus more and more, encountering Him in prayer, at Mass...”

Participating as altar servers does not only allow the boys and girls the satisfaction of being able to function and contribute in the most meaningful way as member of the liturgical team. It also help them develop certain qualities (as noted by Katie Dawson, Director of faith formation) through their service, including:

RESPONSIBILITY. Altar servers must memorize the Mass and commit to a regular schedule of service.

PUNCTUALITY. Servers are required to arrive early to each Mass in order to determine their roles, prepare items and dress in their albs.

ATTENTIVENESS. Altar servers learn the deeper meaning behind each step of the liturgy.

POISE. Servers must spring into action when mistakes are made. They know to step in when an item is misplaced and smooth out rough edges during the Mass.

MATURITY. Altar service contributes to a server’s maturity as they learn lessons and put their knowledge into practice.

For OLM students, altar serving allow them to earn block points. Additionally, the 8th Graders who are especially applying to Catholic HS will be able to include altar serving in their Church and community service.

We have posted flyers by the OLM hallway, at the Church and at the Parish Center. Please email Mrs. Mari Fe Torrea (mfbtorrea@gmail.com) and/or Mrs. Jillian Perez (jillian.r.perez@gmail.com) of your intent to join. Thank you.
