What Are We Learning?
Award-Winning Books
All of our students enjoyed reading previous Caldecott winners. Kindergarten and 1st grade students enjoyed reading Beekle. When we finished reading the book, I asked students to chose an imaginary friend out of Imaginary Friend World and name it. They created some impressive imaginary friends. Once all were created, we introduced our new imaginary friend to our classmates. Students enjoyed connecting art to literature, and extending the story passed the last page. We also read some notable books that were front-runners to win the Caldecott this year. Our favorite was Wolf in the Snow by Matthew Cordell. We loved how Mr. Cordell was able to portray an action-packed, feel good story using only a handful of words. We were thrilled when Wolf in the Snow was announced the winner of the Caldecott Medal!
