Early Life

Jean was born in geneva in 1712. When he was 13 his mother had died and his father was a failing watch maker. He had to fend for himself afterwards. For a short time he was an apprentice to a engraver who brutally mistreated him. He eventually ran away and traveled around europe. He was lucky to meet several wealthy people who provided an education for him.

Jean was considered to be one of the greatest philosophers of the 18th century.
