Message from Superintendent Cybulla
Dear East China Schools Community,
At the November 28, 2022 Board of Education meeting the Summer Tax Collection resolution was once again presented to the ECSD board of education. In 2005 East China School District made the decision to collect tax monies in the summer to prevent the need to borrow money during the month that school districts in Michigan do not recieve a school state aide payment. The month that the district does recieve the payment is September and the summer tax collection allevates the need to incure the interest costs of borrowing money from the State Aid Note program for short-term operational cash flow for our district. I appreciate the school boards foresight and planning to remain fiscially responsible and keep our spending focused on the needs of our students.

It has been a busy fall at Belle River. The staff, students, and families have enjoyed many special events and activities. We kicked off the fall events with a PTO sponsored “Trick-or-Treat Around the River” and Halloween Movie Night. Families trick-or-treated around the outside of the building followed by a viewing of Hocus Pocus II in the gym. The PTO sold refreshments, Chewbacca made an appearance, and everyone had a fun night.
The Belle River Families were also busy this fall with our PTO “World’s Greatest Chocolate” candy bar fundraiser. This is a very successful fundraiser for our school each year. We appreciate the support of all of our families. The students enjoy searching for the “Golden Tickets” each year. Here are some of our lucky winners! Each winner received a giant chocolate bar to share with their family.
Our Kindergarten classes had a special visit from our Marine City Fire Department this fall too! The firemen taught our kindergarteners all about fire safety and what to do in an emergency situation. Then the best part of the visit…they all got to squirt the fire hose! Thank you Marine City Fire Department for this special experience.
A special “Thank You” to the Marine City Marching Band and Mr. Fox for performing at Belle River this fall. It is a very special day when they come to our school. The staff and students sure enjoyed their performance. The upside down drummers were a huge hit! We loved learning all about the different instruments and hearing them each play. We also really enjoyed the flag routines and the dancing.
We wrapped up the fall season with the Book Fair and Parent-Teacher Conferences, which are also fall favorite events at Belle River. The Scholastic Book Fair always brings a lot of smiles and great book shopping! Our students had a lot of fun picking out books during the school day and our families enjoyed shopping during our conference times. A special “thank you” to Tabitha Servick for volunteering her time to run the fair during conference hours. We sure appreciated being able to open this event up to our families. The PTO also organized a wonderful “Souper” luncheon for our teachers during these busy two days of conferences. Thank you to all of our Belle River families who donated food items to this wonderful event. The staff greatly appreciated all of the delicious soups, sandwiches, and desserts. A special “thank you” to Karrie Mackie and Sara Waelens for organizing this special surprise for the staff.

SCMS Cross Country
The SCMS cross country team had an outstanding season, with outstanding team and individual performances each race! Leading our boys' team was Ethan Kreger with many first-place finishes and Gabriella Komarowski led our girls' team to several first and second place team victories!
We had many runners placing in the top 20 every race and our 6/7 graders returning next year will continue to shine! Congratulations to all our team members and a huge thank you to our parents who make it all possible! Go Saints!

Bond 2020 Construction Update
Promises Made, Promises Kept!
In the next few weeks, the Central Office staff will be relocated back to the Central Office building. This is necessary for the construction to start on the MCHS. The current plan calls for the start of construction to begin during the Christmas break. The first phase will be the abatement and demolition of the first two areas. Once the Central Office has returned to their normal location, the two areas will be vacated and will not cause any interruption to the normal school activities.
