3rd Grade Physical Education Newsletter
Unit Activities
The 3rd graders have been rotating through unit skills with each P.E. teacher coupled by some grade level game days. The first round of activities was Throwing & Catching, Jump Roping, and Striking and now they are Kicking/Punting, Juggling, Climbing/Tumbling. Each day the 3rd graders begin with a short jog and a combination of strength and flexibility exercises. Then they begin their unit activities!
Throwing & Catching
Taught by Coach Adams, throwing and catching for 3rd graders builds on what they have learned in 1st and 2nd grade. They have worked on throwing to a target, catching pop flies, throwing while in motion, catching off of a bounce, one handed catches, non-dominant hand throwing/catching and much more. The 3rd graders have also begun self assessing their skills as well as peer assessing. This is a great way to get them motivated to learn the mechanics and what to look for when watching and doing the act of throwing or catching.
Jump Roping
3rd grade jump roping students are working on a variety of jump rope tricks that are beginner, intermediate, partner, long jump rope, jumping with moon hopper and many more. They are even making up their own types of jumps! Their speed jump roping (# of jumps in 30 seconds) is also assessed by Ms. Brummer who teaches this unit. To assist them in learning new tricks or just becoming a more "efficient" jump roper, students have been recording themselves on an iPad to see their form and make corrections.
