The Safe School Helpline is provided to allow students, parents and community members the ability to confidentially submit report threats of violence, suicide, bullying or illegal activity that impact KPBSD schools, students, or staff. This service provides users the opportunity to leave a message or speak with a live crisis counselor for immediate needs. The helpline is administered by an independent, outside company. All communications remain private, confidential, and anonymous.
Four Ways to Report to the Safe School Helpline:
Call: 1-800-418-6423 or 1-800-4-1-VOICE (Ext. 359)
Text: TIPS to 614-426-0240
Alaska Book Week
The first week of October marks Alaska Book Week sponsored by the Alaska Center for the Book.
Stephanie Schott, Early Literacy Director of Best Beginnings, has contributed a short video on the benefits of reading aloud, that is aimed at parents of young children, for parents to watch at their leisure. The Alaska Center for the Book invites you to share the link widely: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7RwZftXrlWA
You can also find out more about 2023 Alaska Book Week activities at the Alaska Center for the Book website. Many of the activities are live in the Anchorage area but there are venues in Wasilla, Ketchikan, and Homer as well, but check the Alaska Book Week web page https://alaskabookweek.org/ to view the variety of events and presentations and discover that there a number of offerings, like Stephanie's, are available as videos or will be presented next week via Zoom. Examples are a Zoom broadcast called Teachers Turned Writers and a video by novelist Jamey Bradbury called Being the Writer You Are.

Cooper Landing School is in need of substitutes for all positions: teacher, instructional aide, special education aide, secretary, and custodian. If one of our staff is out, we have no one to cover for them. There is a bit of paperwork involved, but it can all be done online. If you are interested, please go to the KPBSD website to apply: https://kpbsd.org/departments/assistant-superintendent/instructional-services/hr/substitute-information/
Teachers only need to have a high school diploma or GED. A teaching certificate is not required.
It's becoming a bit cooler as of late. Please make sure your child has a warm jacket, hat, gloves, and when the snow falls, snow pants and boots. If it is convenient for you, and your child has extras, these things can be kept at the school. Please make sure to label each item with your child's name.
Community School Activities to Resume
We recently submitted the required Building Use Agreements with insurance certificates to enable us to resume Community School activities. The schedule will be as follows:
Tot Time - Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11:45 am - 12:45 pm
Volleyball - Thursdays, 6:00 - 9:00 pm
Walking/Work-out - Monday through Friday, 7:15 - 8:15 am
Everything has been approved by the district office, and activities will most likely begin October 9. Please keep an eye on the Cooper Landing Community Crier for more information.
District Office has informed us that since there is no student contact for Community School activities, background checks are no longer needed unless you are issued a key to the school.
Parents who wish to accompany their child on field trips (whether or not you are driving a student other than your own), must complete a background check. To complete the process, please click here: https://kpbsd.org/departments/assistant-superintendent/instructional-services/hr/volunteer/
Cooper Landing Community Library is open again on Tuesday afternoons, from 3-5pm, so that students have an opportunity to visit the library after school. The librarians look forward to seeing both parents and students there!

Hope School Happenings
What an awesome Kasitsna Bay Trip for these students. I am so proud to report that I have not heard one negative report. They all seemed to like their hike the most and tide pooling was a close second. This morning a few students spoken with me about sea urchins. A high school student was very taken by a whale breaking the surface water. Mrs. Christen was discussing facts about aquatic animals with all of them this morning. This was a great science trip with lots of hands on experience for the students.
October 9th: PTO Meeting at 3:45 PM at the Hope School
October 12th: Early Release - students released at 2:00
October 13th: No School for students
October 26th & 27th: No School for students/Parent Teacher Conferences
Volunteers and Substitute Teachers: Hope School is always happy to have substitute teachers and volunteers. Opportunity is available for both positions currently. Please consider one or both positions https://www.applitrack.com/kpbsd/onlineapp/default.aspx?Category=Volunteer+Screening+Process
