From the Student Support Counselor
Parents,
The next few weeks I will be switching gears and talking about Drug Abuse and Prevention, as we move towards Red Ribbon Week. I will focus on information/education, as well as providing resources for you as parents to access for additional information and supports.
So, let’s get started with some statistics. I know, you are saying, “No! Not math!”, but alas, here it goes. Research shows that children of parents/guardians who talk to their teens regularly about drugs are 42% less likely to use drugs than those who don’t. Unfortunately, same said research reports that only about 25% of teens have these kinds of conversations with their parents/guardians. The most alarming statistic I have seen to date is this-66% of children who abuse prescription drugs get them from family or friends. In addition, 52% of drug overdose deaths in the United States are related to prescription drugs.
So, let’s take advantage of those alarming stats and start with abuse of prescription drugs this week. What can you do to help prevent this from occurring with your teen?
● Lock up your medicine
○ Secure your medicine somewhere your children cannot access
● Take inventory
○ You can download a Home Medicine Inventory Card at www.lockyourmeds.org, write down the name and amount of medications you currently have and regularly check it to make sure nothing has gone missing
● Educate yourself and your children
○ Take some time to learn about the most commonly abused types of prescription medicine and talk to your children about the dangers. The most commonly abused prescription medicines are pain relievers, sedatives, stimulants, and tranquilizers.
● Set clear boundaries and rules and monitor often
● Share your knowledge
○ Share what you have learned with other parents. Together, you can work towards change.
● Properly dispose of old and unused medicine
○ Visit www.lockyourmeds.org once again and learn the guidelines of proper disposal
Although I will dedicate a later submission to Opioids, I will mention this week that prescription painkillers, such as Oxycodone (Oxycontin) and Hydrocodone (Vicodin) slow breathing and can lead to life-threatening respiratory depression when not used under a doctor’s supervision. These drugs are also HIGHLY addictive and the risk for overdose with them is high. Did you also know that these prescription meds belong to the same class of drugs as heroin? Yep, they are that powerful.
Tranquilizers create a calming effect and for that reason, many teens who experience anxiety will latch on to these kinds of medicines. In fact, they are often prescribed for anxiety, panic attacks, and sleep disorders. Unfortunately, there is also potential for addiction.
Many teenagers are taking stimulant-based medicine to treat ADHD, such as Ritalin. Stimulants, when used inappropriately, can cause dangerously high body temperatures, seizures, and heart attacks.
The bottom line here is erring on the side of caution. Lock up your prescriptions. Lock up your children’s prescriptions and monitor them. Often, I hear parents say something like, “They’re old enough and can take their medicine without me having to remind them.” This may be true, but depending on the medicine, supervision may be warranted to avoid possible misuse, addiction and/or overdose.
As always, I am just a phone call or e-mail away. Reach out with concerns or questions.
