VOGELTOWN SCHOOL - THE 'VS' WAY
Care for the land, Care for the people, Go Forward
Our Values: I.R.O.C.K
Inclusive, Respectful, Original, Courageous, Kind
Whakauru, Whakaute, Tipu, Kaha, Atawhai
SCHOOL VALUE THIS TERM: 'TO BE RESPECTFUL'
These are for our Vogeltown learners to be:
Inclusive (Whakaru), Respectful (Whakaute), Original (Tipu), Courageous (Kaha) and Kind (Atawhai).
These values were chosen by the staff, learners and community of Vogeltown School in 2019.
This term we are focusing on being 'Respectful'.
To be respectful we want our learners to greet people in a friendly manner, listen to others when they speak, share and take turns, work with others in work and play, keep our hands and feet to ourselves and say kind and encouraging things!
SCHOOL GOAL: 'BE PROUD' - POHO KERERU!
WHAT:
Getting satisfaction from doing your best in everything!
Being lucky enough to attend this awesome school!
WHY:
You don’t have to rely on extrinsic rewards – just the pride of doing your best!
You give more effort when you are proud of your work
Poho Kereru – pump out your chest and be proud of your efforts!
SIGNS OF SUCCESS:
You are a proud Vogeltowner and talk about the school like it is home!
You compliment others on doing their best!
You feel good inside when you give 100% to your work, friendships and life!
You speak and act positively when people ask about your learning!
You make others feel good when they are around you!
KIA ORA VS WHANAU, FROM MR O
It is great to be back at school under Covid-19 Level 1 conditions. Hopefully this will continue and we can offer all the learning opportunities we have planned for this term - it is certainly going to be busy!
It has been an awesome first week back. The weather is beginning to sort itself out after a 'hideous' Monday, a 'windy' Thursday and a 'perfect' Friday. We regard Term 4 as a 'summer term' and as such we ask every Vogeltown learner to have a 'bucket hat' to keep the sun off the face and back of the neck. If you have not got one, we sell Vogeltown School hats from the office for $15.
As you will see from the term overview below, we have a very busy term planned. Please check our school calendar as well and update your personal calendars. We encourage whanau to come in on any of our whanau events, we have 3 of these events planned over this term.
We are back in to summer sports, and it is great to see the kids out practicing their touch skills and cricket skills!
Term 4 is a busy term for our Year 6 students. This is their last term at Vogeltown before they move on to Year 7. Many of our Year 6 students have been here since they were five years old, so the end of the term will be particularly hard for our Year 6 students and teachers! If you do have a Year 6 child, please make sure they are enrolled at their next school for 2021.
You will notice that the upgrades on Huatoki Street are still developing. Once finished the front of both schools, the shared footpaths and the gardens will look awesome. See the update about these areas below.
We are nearing the time where we begin the process of placing students in classes for 2021. To assist the school with preparation for 2021, please inform the office of any students who may be starting or leaving that we do not already know about. Classes for 2021 will be notified to parents in the bottom of the 'Achievement Reports' which come out in Week 9 of this term. There will also be an opportunity for the kids to visit their new class and teacher before the end of this term.
Dates to look out for the next two weeks:
Tuesday 20 October - Home and School Quiz night (At The Good Home)
Wednesday 21 October - Highlands Int coming to Vogeltown to talk to Year 6 students (11:00am)
Friday 23 October - Four Year Old Friday 9:00am - 11:00am
Monday 26 October - Labour Day (No School)
Tuesday 27 October - BoT Meeting 6:30pm
Have a great weekend with your families, whanau. Be kind, be safe, be aware.
Aroha nui, Mr O
Front of the Senior and Junior schools
The front of both schools is already looking quite different, especially with the Huatoki river in the concrete (soon to be concrete ground to reveal the 'gems' in the river').
The council are planting up the gardens and, once completed, these changes will really 'lift' the entrance ways to both schools. We are still to get some new seats in front of both schools and a massive welcome sign in front of the senior school - see the designs below.

Covid Level 1 Information for Vogeltown School
At Vogeltown School:
There will be no more signage displayed around the school sites
Parents/caregivers are welcome on site. You do not need to ring before coming on school sites. Although we are still encouraging the morning ‘drop offs’ at the gates.
After 3pm parents/caregivers and kids are allowed on the school sites. Please be aware however that our staff are still working after 3pm to get programmes ready for the next day in their rooms - they need this time for preparation.
We will open the drinking fountains on both school sites. Learners can still bring drink bottles if they so wish.
We will still ask that if your child is sick to please keep them home. As you know staying at home if you’re sick is especially important at Alert Level 1. The risk of COVID-19 being spread in the community is much greater when there are no restrictions on gatherings or going out.
If your child has cold or flu symptoms you should call your doctor or Healthline on 0800 358 5453 for advice about getting tested. If recommended to get tested, you should do so.
For our Vogeltown community:
COVID-19 is contained at Alert Level 1, but it’s still worthwhile to keep a safe distance from people you don’t know while out and about. This will help to minimise the spread of COVID-19 if community transmission returns.
For air travel you are not required to wear a face covering, (if not travelling to, through or from Auckland), but you are encouraged to do so for your safety and the safety of those around you. Consider doing the same for all inter-regional travel.
Scan into places through the NZ COVID Tracer app or keep a good record of where you have been, to support speedy contact tracing.
We will still have our ‘contact tracing QR code’ posters up at our classroom doors and office doors.
There are no restrictions on numbers at gatherings. Schools, like workplaces, are not considered to be gatherings. Physical activities including cultural and sporting activities, practices and events can go ahead
There are no restrictions on domestic travel. People should avoid using mass transport if sick, awaiting a result from a COVID-19 test or required/recommended to self-isolate.
