Captain America is my Mentor (Text)
Taking a speech and making it your own.
Want to sound like a hero?
We've all read or heard a speech that makes us want to get up and...DO SOMETHING!!! Or is it just me? In this short tutorial, I'll show you how I take a great speech and make it my own. I'll show you what questions I ask myself. I'll show you what my thought process is. And I'll show you how you can do the same.
If you're familiar with the style of Gretchen Bernabei, this will look familiar. Now...
Pens! Pencils! Paper!
ASSEMBLE!
Step 1: Find a speech that moves you.
Step 2: Convert that speech to text.
"Attention all S.H.I.E.L.D agents, this is Steve Rogers. You've heard a lot about me over the last few days; some of you were even ordered to hunt me down. But I think it's time you know the truth.
S.H.I.E.L.D is not what we thought it was; it's been taken over by HYDRA. Alexander Pierce is their leader; the S.T.R.I.K.E and Insight crew are HYDRA as well. I don't know how many more, but I know they're in the building. They could be standing right next to you. They almost have what they want; absolute control. They shot Nick Fury, and it won't end there.
If you launch those Helicarriers today, HYDRA will be able to kill anyone that stands in their way...unless we stop them. I know I'm asking a lot, but the price of freedom is high; it always has been. And it's a price I'm willing to pay. And if I'm the only one, then so be it. But I'm willing to bet I'm not."
Marvel Studios presents ; produced by Kevin Feige ; screenplay by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely ; directed by Anthony and Joe Russo. Captain America. The Winter Soldier. [Manhattan Beach, California] :Marvel Studios, 2014.
Step 3: "Kernelize" the speech. What are all the sections doing?
Step 4: Identify your audience and your message.
Me: For this example, I'm going to identify my audience as my fellow teachers.
MENTOR: Cap' wanted the Agents to help him stop HYDRA from getting "what they want; absolute control." He wants the agents on his side to stop HYDRA. What do you want from your audience?
Me: For this example, I'm going to ask my fellow teachers to abandon "old ways" of teaching and try new methods during this time of COVID-19.
Step 5: Write Your Kernel Essay
Step 6: Flesh it Out!
Your Turn!
Go on. You know you want to.
