Lafayette Art Show
Lafayette Art Show Highlighting Our After-School
Art Enrichment Groups
Projects from our World of Puppetry, Weaving, Ceramics and Mural Painting Groups will be displayed, along with many student demonstrations. There will be shadow puppets acting, jaw-action rod puppets talking and some simple marionettes walking and dancing. Other students will be weaving on several different kinds of looms. Still other students will be making ceramic plaques, masks, tiny sculptures and pottery. The painting group will demonstrate how we projected their drawings on the wall and started to paint.
ART SHOW IS IN OUR GYM MAY 18 FROM 7:00 to 8:00 PM
A Note from Mrs. Russo
After much consideration and conversation, Lafayette will begin to transition how we say farewell to our 5th grade students. This year our 5th graders will participate in the traditional Clap Out but we will add a 5th grade ceremony to the calendar. Please mark your calendar for June 17th at 9:15 a.m. (Raindate June 20th at 9:15 a.m.) More details will follow soon.

PTO News....
Greetings LAF Community
READ-A-THON
Thank you to all our students who participated in our 3rd annual Read-A-Thon. We saw our students get excited about reading and tracking their progress. They seemed to really enjoy the weekly rewards they received for meeting school wide goals (especially the opportunity to see our principals get pies in their faces!). Thanks also goes to all the families and friends who donated money to support our students. Once again, the Read-A-Thon was successful in earning a significant amount of money for the PTO. We are already discussing PTO gifts for next school year. These gifts would not be possible without your generous support!!
SCHOOL SUPPLIES
School supplies for rising 4th and 5th graders were on sale until Monday May 2nd. Thanks to Janie Garrett for organizing this sale. Unfortunately, school supply kits are no longer available for purchase. If you missed the sale, please contact the LAF office for a list of supplies needed (broken down by grade).
GARDEN
The PTO is providing funding to the LAF Environmental Club to start a garden in one of the school courtyards. Students and volunteer teachers and parents have begun planting the garden. The Environmental Club is purchasing an indoor vertical garden that will be used to start growing plants before they are ready to be transferred to the outdoor garden. All LAF students will be able to enjoy the outdoor garden and to volunteer to work in it if they choose. They’ll also be able to observe the growth in the indoor vertical garden on a regular basis and to learn about the new trend in urban gardening. We are so excited for this project!
FIELD DAY
LAF’s Field Day will be held on Friday May 13th. Thanks to Emily Wurdemann, Melissa Bailey, and Stacie Hay for working with our PE teachers to organize Field Day! Thanks also to all the parents who have volunteered to help out at Field Day. This event requires a lot of coordination and it wouldn’t be possible without parent participation.
PICTURE DAY
Spring Picture Day will be held on Wednesday May 18th. We will soon be sending out a Volunteer Spot sign up for this day. Please consider helping us with this event for an hour or two on the 18th. Thanks to Emily Wurdemann and Shannon Matter for their work in planning Picture Day.
PTO BOARD ’16-‘17
Thanks to everyone who has signed up to serve as a committee head for next year. We had a great response from parents looking to volunteer and we now have all committee board positions filled. We’re going to have a talented and enthusiastic group of people leading the PTO next school year! Throughout the year, we will send out requests for volunteers for specific events (e.g. book fair, head show, mini marathon). Typically, the requests will go out about a month before any given event.
UPCOMING MEETINGS
Our last PTO meeting was held on Thursday May5th. Mrs. Jill Gihorski, principal of the Chatham Middle School ,was the guest speaker at this meeting. Her talk focused on helping children transition from LAF to the middle school. We will be having our old board/new board transition meeting on June 9th at 9:15 in the LAF library.
Sincerely,
Wendy Kuppenheimer
