January Guidance Gazette

Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. (James 4:8)

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to all of you! During this first month of the new year, I have asked our older students (grades 5-8) to think about the Bible verse I included above. I proposed that every year, our resolution should be to draw nearer to God. All of the students had great ideas on how to do so. Pose this question yourself, and I think you'll be impressed with their answers!

If I had to pick just one problem that our students tend toward, I would have to say anxiety. Students from the earliest primary grades through middle school have exhibited some struggles with anxiety, stress, perfectionism, and the like. This link will take you to a very helpful article with tips for parents on how to help their anxious child: https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/dont-worry-mom/201302/12-tips-reduce-your-childs-stress-and-anxiety

If you feel that your child is struggling with this issue, please let me know so that we can help him or her develop some coping strategies at school, and share the problem with the child's teacher.

Lunch Bunch

Our sixth grade Girls Lunch Bunch recently watched a video that you may wish to share with your child. It is from the Dove corporation and it is entitled, "You Are More Beautiful Than You Think." The girls were quite intrigued and I think it helped them realize that most of us have unfounded insecurities and negative feelings about our appearances. I encourage you to take a few minutes to watch it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=litXW91UauE

40 Crosses

Believe it or not, Lent is almost upon us! This link will take you to a 40 Crosses Calendar. It's a simple way to help our children to increase their prayer and good works throughout the season. http://catechistsjourney.loyolapress.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/2016-40-crosses-english.pdf Middle school students can earn House Points for participating in the 40 Crosses Calendar. Please see the February points sheet for details.
