Northside Updates

Week of 2/8/16 - Go Spartans!

Chromebook C.A.R.E.

Starting this week, students will be allowed to transport their Chromebooks to and from school. The purpose of the device take-home is two fold: 1) to help support students with their homework and research needs. 2) in preparation for a potential e-learning day. If a student already has a device at home, they are encouraged to leave their Chromebook at school. The student's Chromebook is to be treated as BCSC property, and students are responsible for the care of the device. Students will be bringing home a charger that is to stay at home so the device can be charged overnight and ready for school the next day. They have been introduced to "Chromebook C.A.R.E." to remind them of our school-wide expectations. Feel free to contact Mr. Burton (burtone@bcsc.k12.in.us) with any questions.

C - Charge your device each night

A - Allow - students are the only people allowed to use their device. Students are only allowed to carry their devices in the Chromebook case.

R - Return - Devices (like any school materials) should return to school each day
E - All eyes are on you. Is your digital responsibleness where it should be? Make sure to use the device appropriately.

Washington D.C. Trip - Counting Down the Days!

With fewer than 100 days remaining before our departure for Washington D.C. we are tying up loose ends to ensure the trip is a great experience for the 198 individuals currently registered. It is not too late to register, but the deadline is approaching as we will be securing tickets, reserving lodging and assigning roommates soon. If your student is still considering possibly traveling with their peers, act quickly to ensure they have a seat on the bus. Contact Mr. Lax (laxt@bcsc.k12.in.us or 812.314.3883) immediately with any questions. See the attached flier for information on registering online.

Golf Team - Call Out Meeting

There will be a meeting for any student interested in participating on the Spartan Golf Team. The meeting is for both the boy's and girl's teams.

When: Tuesday, February 23rd at 6:00pm

Where: Northside Cafeteria

From the Guidance Office

Current 7th Grade students: In the next couple weeks Mr. Ousley will be going into all 7th grade classrooms for 8th grade scheduling. 7th grade students will be bringing home an enrollment worksheet for you to fill out and return to his or her social studies teacher. One of the questions on the enrollment worksheet is the decision to take World Language in 8th grade, for high school credit. The info below might help you to make that decision.

World Languages – Spanish 1, Spanish 1B, Spanish 2, French 1 and French 2 are offered in eighth grade. These courses are the equivalent of the material and skills learned at the first and second level of World Language in the high schools. It is recommended that current 7th grade student only pick up World Language in their 8th grade year if they are an A/B student. The World Language grade that a student receives in 8th grade will be on their high school transcript.

Presentation on Dyslexia: Susan Barton will be holding a free presentation for information on student dyslexia. She is the creator of the Barton Reading and Spelling System, a tutoring system specifically designed for individuals with dyslexia. We at Foundations Dyslexia and Learning Centers of Bloomington, Columbus, and Seymour are excited to sponsor this event, and we hope that you will encourage your staff, as well as parents, to attend. If you would distribute this information via your website, Facebook page, bulletin boards, weekly student newsletter, and/or other forms of communication with teachers and families, we would greatly appreciate your assistance. The presentation is on March 17th beginning at 6:00pm at Community Church of Columbus in Columbus, Indiana. If you would like hard copies of the flyer, please email me and let me know how many you would like, and I would be glad to get the additional copies to you. If you have any additional questions about dyslexia or other learning disabilities, please feel free to contact me at any time.
