The Waldron Weekly ‘20-‘21
volume 2
Principal's Update
Hello Anasazi Scorpion community!
I hope this communication finds you healthy and safe. With information changing and updating so frequently, I though it best to send a new Waldron Weekly. Please review this one in detail as volume 2 may have enhancements or changes from the last edition.
There has been a lot of activity happening as the district initiates the SOL elementary program (different than online learning with Anasazi/EDL). It has required SUSD to open a new “school” (albeit, virtual) in a short amount of time and we have just recently learned which students will be attending SOL or Anasazi/EDL.
This required shifts in staffing due to needs of the new “school"/SOL, changes in the number of students attending Anasazi, and the needs of the teachers and staff (some SUSD employees may require accommodations to teach only online at SOL).
This past Friday morning, 7/31/20, the Anasazi teachers and I met and then Anasazi staffing was finalized during the remainder of the afternoon as there were changes needing to be made. After staffing changes were made, students returning to EDL with Anasazi had to be redistributed into classes due to shifts in staffing. Please understand that while we always want to partner with families and take parental input on classroom environments into consideration; every parent request may not have been possible after the class shifts occurred. We appreciate your understanding and patience. I have confidence in every Anasazi teacher and am sure your child will receive the highest quality education no matter which classroom they are placed in.
We know that you (and the students) are anxious to learn who their teacher is for the school year. You can expect to hear from your child’s teacher hopefully by Wednesday, August 5th.
I know this is a very uncertain time and that this is not the ideal way to go to school for elementary children. Despite the challenges, the Anasazi staff and I are super excited to start the school year. We are here for you and the students. We will not only get through this together, but we will come out stronger than ever!
Serving your children,
Ms. Jennifer Waldron

''What Does My Child's School Day Look Like During EDL?"
Schools will use Buzz as a central location for information. Think of it as a landing page for links. No matter if you have a high schooler, middle schooler or elementary student - all will start with Buzz. There will be a single log in and from there you can find the links for your child's virtual classroom. Content will be provided through Zoom, Teams, and/or Google Hangouts. *More details and step by steps will be coming. Teachers are being trained on this and building it this week during our time together.
Attendance is required during EDL, but guidelines from ADE and SUSD are forthcoming on this issue. We understand that there may be a need for a student to complete work “after-hours” and we will work with individual families to try and meet their needs as much as we are able.
Grading: Standards-based grading practices will be followed for grading. This includes late work, missing work, and retakes.
Assignments and Assessments: Students will submit 2 - 3 artifacts (i.e. graphic organizer, writing assignment, etc.) per week to support essential standards and to measure proficiency. Both formative and summative assessments will be given at appropriate times during learning sessions.
Hours:
- Grades K-3: 3 - 3.5 hours of synchronous (live with a teacher) instruction and 1 - 1.5 hours of asynchronous (with a teacher, but recorded or similar) instruction per day, which is approximately 20 hours per week
- Grades 4-5: 4 - 4.5 hours of synchronous (live with a teacher) instruction and 1 - 1.5 hours of asynchronous (with a teacher, but recorded or similar) instruction per day, which is approximately 25 hours per week

Anasazi Upcoming Events
Drive-Up Laptop Distribution August 6th and August 7th
Thursday, August 6th 9:00 -11:00am for (3rd-5th GRADES)
Thursday, August 6th 5:00-6:30pm (ALL GRADES for those needing afternoon hours)
Friday, August 7th 9:00-11:00am for (PreK-2nd GRADES)
- Any Anasazi student in (EDL) or (SOL) who needs a device can pickup their Chromebook.
- Students already issued a device, or do not need a device, are not required to attend.
- Students leaving the district please return your issued device.
- Distribution will be in our parking lot and done like a drive through. Please remain in your car and have a driver’s license. A parent or legal guardian must be present.
Your child is not required to use an SUSD issued computer. If you have one at home…that is fine. If your child still has their devices from last year, they do not need to return the device as they can continue to utilize it (this includes families opting for SOL or moving to another SUSD school). If you want to “drive through” for meet and greet during the teacher times without getting a device…we encourage that and would love to see you.
In an attempt to accommodate various schedules, but also take into account the extreme heat, we have scheduled morning times and one afternoon make-up time (please note that some teachers will NOT be available during the Thursday afternoon time nor a time that coincides with another grade level).
We understand that this may mean families have to “drive through” multiple times but we are trying to make every attempt for your student to physically see the teacher prior to going online and keep the lines and wait times manageable. We appreciate your patience and flexibility!

Enhanced Distance Learning (EDL) Camps for SUSD Kindergarten through 8th Grade Students
We are pleased to announce that beginning August 10, the first day of the new school year for all students, SUSD will open five Enhanced Distance Learning (EDL) Camps for families in the SUSD community with Kindergarten through 8th grade students. The EDL Camps will provide families with a supervised place for their K-8 children to be during the school day while they are at work. They will continue to operate until such time as school campuses reopen for learning. This program is required under Executive Order 2020-51, Open for Learning, issued by Governor Doug Ducey.
· Camps will be located at Desert Canyon Elementary, Hopi Elementary, Pima Traditional, Pueblo Elementary and Tonalea K-8.
· Space is limited to 100 students per site.
· Students will be required to stay at the camp for the entire school day.
· Applications will be prioritized in this order: children of First Responders (including health care workers); children of SUSD staff members; children who receive SUSD Special Education or English Language services; children who have a 504 Plan or attend a Title I school; children of Essential Workers.
· Nutrition Services will provide breakfast and lunch at all EDL Camp sites. Meal charges will be based on each student's individual, approved meal status: paid, reduced or free. Find the Free and Reduced Application online at susd.org/Meals, in school offices and at the Nutrition Services Office at 701 N. Miller Rd., Scottsdale, AZ 85257.
